A couple from last night’s game. Nothing too exciting for pics, but I did try a new (for me) method of shooting. As recommended by DavidEB in another hockey thread, I set a CWB from a shot off a plain piece of ice, and then used the histogram to set up the cam in manual mode. Worked well for me exposure wise, but the WB was off on a lot of the pics. When looking at the thumbnails in my pic browser it is most noticeable. I figure it's the lighting in our rink. Some are spot on, and some have a heavy pink cast. I was able to fix it fairly well in PSE5, but I am sticking with AWB. It works best for me in that situation. Manual mode did work well though. I normally shoot in TV.

CC always welcome!

I don't know if this would be possible or not, but you may want to try to get a little bit of crowd in the stands into the background of your images rather than the metal some of these have now (#2 and 3). In some arenas that's probably not even possible, but i've always found that my shots are better when I do the aforementioned.

These are great captures though, so keep them coming! :)

Hope they turn out ok...

If you can do it, I can do it. I just have to figure out a different way to do it.

You definitely have the kit for it! All the above were shot with the 70-200 2.8L. Nice lens for this purpose, even with the dismal lighting we deal with in these rinks. I shot at 1600 ISO and cleaned them up just a bit using the weakest settings in Noiseware.

KROHN27, sorry about your collar bone! I hope it wasn't one of our players that did you in!

folville, not much of a crowd in this rink. They hardly even have any seating! These kids play in the house league, so only us diehard parents and a few of the players girlfriends hang around to watch... I agree though, something besides the rink maintenance area would make a better background. Maybe I'll play around and try to blur that area in PS. Not too good at that stuff though.

I suppose the unnofficiality of the leage would explain why the white team's goalie has a cat's eye mask (the kind with really big holes around the eyes that professionals always wear). I've wanted one for myself for years, but I've never been able to wear one because of Minnesota league rules.

There's not much you can do about the fans then, I guess, but getting anything else in the background may lighten up the image just a little, which wouldn't be a bad thing, I don't think.

Very good job. The first and third shots are my favorites. The lighting in the rink must not be very consistent and that is why you had some problems with the custom white balance. Overall these are very nice shots. Great job.

Nice job. 4th is my fav -- I like heads-up shots that show faces.

We'll be playing there in 4 weeks - hopefully no broken bones, though.
