OK gang.. here's the deal.. In a few months my fiancee and I are merging finances. She is very money management oriented and it will be a looong time before I can just go out and spend some money, so I'm trying to get it all in now (under the radar).. I've just bought a new bag (Slingshot 200), tripod (Dynatran AT-858BL), Sigma EX 24-70 2.8 Macro.. I have a Tamron 70-300 4-5.6, kit lens, and 50mm 1.8. I can't buy a flash, as I don't have one now, and she obviously notice one magically appearing. Any suggestions? Anyone think I could pick up a used 70-300 IS for ~$350? Any wide lens suggestions?

Thanks :)

350 lottery tickets. If you hit, I get 10% for such an astute response.

Sorry, I have no ideas here, other than buy the best you can, maybe used.

How about a Canon 100mm f2 prime to go with your 50? Or if you use the 50 quite a bit, how about upgrading it to the 50/1.4? I can think of lots of ways to spend your money!

Interesting.. what would most people use a 100mm f/2 for? Concerts?

Wait, you did buy her an engagement ring, right? That should go a long way before you use up all your credits with her. Have her buy you a decent flash, and go get yourself a EFS 10-22 lens.

Yeah, I already got her a ring.. That's not going to get me any lens or a flash, trust me :)

If you are in a relationship, you need to be completely honest. Tell her upfront that you need a flash and then get one. It looks like that would be your best bet. If you can afford it she should be open to it. If you can't then you should not get it.

I can afford it, not a problem there.. the problem is that she's a CPA/financial planner, and will be running our finances.. she's crazy about saving money and I agree with that for the most part, so I'm just trying to round out my camera equipment while I can (ie. while I can touch my own money!) I'll be getting the 580EX for my birthday in March, I've dropped so many hints she's probably already bought it.

What should I buy? --- A nice pair of pants! Just kidding. :)
Be greatful that you have a woman that is into saving money, rather than spending it! I'm glad my wife is around to keep my hobby spending in check. i can just imagine how far in the hole I'd be if I bought everything I wanted.

On one hand be glad she's into saving, my better half isn't the greatest at saving money, somehow she really has no clue where it all goes. Good thing I'm the saver and make her set aside some of her money, and mine of course, then it's "our" money.

On the flipside of the coin she's understanding of my hobbies and lets me buy gear whenever I want because she knows I wouldn't spend it if it wasn't "extra" money.

Last point, if you're spending your money and it's your last hoorah, just tell her that you're spending $350 on yourself. If you want the flash then just buy the flash. Don't try to be deceptive about it otherwise it may just be a long life for ya fella.

And if she pulls your bluff, tell her most guys would spend their last hoorah at a strip club. You just want a stinkin' flash!! :-)
