I do that for my kids (and continue to explain to them what I am doing), and yes they can take some good pics, one in g&n self portrait thread my son took after I dialled in the settings came out ok.

Exactly what mr klepper said, don't sweat it, but if you want to smile, hand them the cam ;)

Yeah I've done that..I did that a bunch in fact. I would even set up the flash pointed at the ceiling and let them fire off some pictures of me that ended up perfectly exposed. Recently I have been handing people my camera in MF because people tend to turn the focus ring when its in autofocus, and hearing that happen kills me inside. So now I usually let them know either focus or dont focus...but one of these days someone is going to break the motor :(
