nice. he should have bounced that flash off the wall so it's not that big of a distraction to the kids. did you find any of his photos published in the paper and compared them with yours. would love to see the results.

This poor guy is taking a roasting without even being able to see the end result of his endeavours (please post a cutting from the paper if possible).

Also it would good to be able to compare his efforts with your own action images (please post some).

Also, that looks remarkably like a Quantum Q-Flash triggered by a Pocket Wizard which is a reasonably expensive set up. I don't think it would constitute 'crappy indoor equipment' if measured purely on a cost basis.

As to whether flash should be used at all, that's another story that I am sure will be hotly debated ;)

In all actuality that is a killer set up for a game.

I have shot arenas where you are handed a pocket wizard and you are shown where the lights are for your wizard. Strobe lighting is standard in the pro circuit, and because of that heavy lenses are not needed.

Shooting at f/8 or f/11 is ideal when you can pick your background, and I get to at many basketball games. When you can get deeper DOF and sharper images with strobes then by all means do it.

I know that the Shoemaker Center (Univ. of Cincinnati arena) has strobes positioned at the top of the arena and some cameras have a remote in the hot shoe to fire the strobes. Nice set up at UC.

The chap is getting a picture for the paper - not creating fine are. Completely different things. I generally try to avoid this kind of shooting now simply because the types of images that are wanted. The papers aren't expecting or wanting photographic greatness.

Yea, ... totally agree. Personally, I wouldn't mind having that "crapy indoor equipment" (and, btw, it's "crappy", not "crapy") for myself. Pocket wizards and Quantum flashes are not cheap by any means .... I'd be glad to take that stuff off his hands for him so he could get some "better stuff" .....

So, did you take any shots of the game or did you just shoot the newspaper shooter so that you could bad-mouth him in a public forum ? ? ?

And is there a point to bad-mouthing this guy ? ? ?

#1 his equipment is not crappy, it is a darn good set up. The flash set up the way he has it will not effect the players. Shooting at iso3200 might just create way two much noise for him, the flash is a good fill light. Don't judge someone else, unless you want your shots to be judged.

All the pros that shoot B-Ball in my neck of the woods set up 4 or more strobes in the rafters minimum. Triggered by wireless just like this fine gent uses, and often in series so that they recycle faster.

... make my self a little clearer ...

Yes, ... well, now you're just transparent ....

Again, man, what is the point of your criticism of how this guy shot this game? Not only are you bad-mouthing this guy, you post his picture on this forum and tell everyone what a bad man he is for how he shot this game ....

Every camera body, lens, flash, etc. are tools of the trade. There's no ONE right way or wrong way to use those tools - I might have shot the game differently (and with different tools!), but I'm certainly not going to take pot shots at another shooter for the way they shot a game. It's just not cool ....

And, you're right .... a P/S might have been just fine in that situation. But it's just another tool .... and if it works, then it works.

I'm beginning to believe that there are other issues involved here .... no one presents a tirade like that; and has several people point out the errors in that tirade; and then comes back and continues that same tirade (under the guise of making themselves "a little clearer") without something else going on ....

Just my 2 cents, man ....

And, again, where are your shots from this game ? ?

L. Morey - don't get too offended. It is just that "outing" another photographer is generally considered a poor practice. I am a big guy, and for me to get some of the shots I get I get really low to the ground. I cringe when I think how I must look while taking some shots. I would hate it if someone "outed" me and posted images of me on the web saying what a looser I was. Rightfully, or wrongfully, I think some of the images I get are worth the embarassement I bring on my kids. At least I hope so.

Just an FYI for future refrence. But please do continue to post. We'll be nice. You just hit a nerve. Cheers.

Mark --

you may be too optimistic here.

my kids repeatedly tell me that nothing is worth the embarrassment I bring on them. usually preceeded by an exhalation, with eyes rolling, and the startup "Dad, not again...."

Too funny! I have noticed that when I bring my family to an event I am shooting they are starting to sit further and further away from me.
