Hey all,
So I've landed myself a lil gig doing some crowd/DJ/dancefloor shots in a small club here in melbourne but I've never really done this kinda work and am unsure as to any standard techniques and such ill need. Ill be shooting with my EOS350D open at f2.5 or f4 and the shutter @ 1/60th for the flash and the standard 18-55 efs lens, but from there on out im a bit lost, especially in regards to working around strobes, lasers and all that exciting stuff.
If youve got any sudgestions at all I'd love to hear them!
Thanks a bunch.
-Tim

The 18-55 kit lens widest aperture at short end of the focal length is F3.5. Which lens are you using to get F2.8? You might find it a little difficult, although with the use of flash, it may be ok. I find it difficult getting a good enough speed on my 24-105 F4 with the IS on, even on high ISO of around 800.

You may need to bump this up (ISO) to 800 and see what speed you get around the house without the lights off with your kit lens.

Mit2k-

Ive been a nightclub photographer for years now. The basic technique for dynamic pictures is to use an external flash and a longer exposure in Manual mode to capture more ambient light in your pictures. This can work OK without just the regular flash-start at ISO800, partial metering, M mode, f4, 1/20th of a second. You can vary the shutter speed up to a full second for interesting results. The best tip I can give you to get the best pictures is to take at least 2 pictures of every person-that way you will have many more usable pictures. There are many samples at www.scottspellman.com (external link) under Events.

Have fun-
Scott

bannedPermanent ban

Get the 50mm 1.8

Its cheap and will be your best friend.

For my club photography I do not use the flash 90% of the time.

The flash will take out all the colors.

You would not be able to do this while using a flash.
The lsat one was done with a P&S
