Unwanted delay in the shutter firing!?

There were two A80's in the family and recently my daughter got an S3.

The general concensus is that the A80's have a "long" time between pressing the "shoot" button and the shutter firing, whereas the S3 has a "short" time interval.

This presents a problem when the "subject" moves during the "long" delay.

I have gone through the manual, looked through the camera menus and searched the forum, but found nothing about this.

Maybe we are just imagining the delay?

Pretty much normal for a compact camera. The camera needs time to meter and focus, this is the delay your are experiencing, the delay is even longer with the use of flash. It helps to pre focus by half pressing the shutter release before you full press to capture the photo. EX: your kids are doing something cute, aim at them and half press the shutter release and when the "cute" reaches a moment press the rest of the way.

What settings did you use for your shots? Could it be that you're getting a slow shutter speed rather than actual shutter lag? While I don't have the S3, I do have the S2, and find little to no shutter lag.

I used the link from this thread to time my Canon Powershot S3 IS and my Sony DSC-P200.
There is a slight delay if you are watching the timer on the camera LCD rather than timing by looking directly at the timer. Most of the time looking directly at the computer display gave me a 0.00s shutter delay with occasional 0.05s delay. Looking at the camera LCD gave 0.00s, 0.05s and 0.10s with most at 0.05s.

Enjoy.

There's no such thing as a bad photo, just the wrong audience.
EQUIPMENT: Canon Powershot S3 IS, 2x Transcend 2GB x150 SD, 2x 4GB Class 4 Dane-Elec SDHC, LensMate 52mm Adapter Tube and lots of stuff to hang on it.
A couple of flashes and a couple of strobes. My other camera is a Sony DSC-P200.

Thanks for the input.

After posting, I did see where this was brought up before.

I tried the shutter lag test and got 0.1 sec three times in a row after prefocusing. So now I'm wondering "Where's the problem"?

These cameras are pretty amazing.

The problem is that A80 is almost 3 years older camera than S3 IS. Technology is going forward every day, and 3 years make a big difference. A80 use DIGIC processor and S3IS use DIGIC II which improves AF speed very much, as it improves bunch of other functions (color, sharpness, white balance...). So, everything is just ok :)

I'm sorry for possible bad english
