I intend on using my next camera for mostly landscapes, portraits, product photography... but also want to shoot wildlife/motorsports occasionally...

Would the 5D really be a bad choice for the latter? considering my ratio would be 75% Landscape etc and 25% wildlife/sport.

I want the resolution/low noise of the 5D but I don't want to pay so much money if its performance really is too bad for sport. For instance, if you saw a guy at an F1 circuit... would you laugh at them???

EOS 6D, 135L, 24-105L, Mamiya RZ67pro2 and lenses
If you saw a man drowning and could either save him or take a picture...
What kind of film would you use? - Anonymous

I own a EOS 5D, it's a great camera.
If you really want to try before you buy,. Why not hire a 5D for the day. Then get yourself up to Silverstone for the next F1 test day.
There may be some people you will laugh at, who are using their mobile phones to take pics of cars going down the Hanger Straight.
Happy shooting,

Ken

I've shot wildlife with the 5D (Well Bird of Prey Center actually) with only my 70-200 - and it was fine - except for really fast birds coming straight at you.

And don't forget, full frame was used all the time for motorsport and wildlife pre-digital!

I've not tried any highspeed motorsport - but I would have thought it would be ok

I see that you have a 24-105 in your lens lineup.

I'm trying to figure out how the 5D + 24-105IS would compare to a 30D + 17-55IS.

Both have IS. FL is pretty close, with 24-105 an edge at the longer end. (Taking into consideration the 1.6x crop 30D) Aside from the obvious build quality difference, does the 5D + 24-105IS compare well against the 30D+ 17-55IS? The 1 obvious difference is the f/2.8 on the 17-55IS vs. F/4 on the 24-105. But from reading various posts, the larger sensor on the 5D is able to absorb more light so the actual difference is not great?

Can anyone elaborate on this further?

Also I wonder how the bokeh is different, given the different max aperture between the lenses.

Obviously the 24-70 is a great choice, but IS is a must for me...

Thanks.

I think the 5D will more than likely suffice for your photographic needs, anglefire. Since you mentioned you will be shooting 75% lanscapes, and only a little bit of motorsports, I don't see why the 5D won't serve you well. I mean your other option would be the 1D Mark II if you wanted to look at that. But like the other posters, I think you will be fine with the 5D.

Although the 5D wouldn't shoot as many frames per second, it would shoot more frames in total (Jpeg) before the buffer fills up. You could therefore weigh one against the other in some sports
Not saying 5 or 8.5 frames is not an advantage in some circumstances.

If you want real quality images, and more accurate colour redition, the 5D is for you, especially for landscape work.

Edit:
Continuous shooting
1DS MII.........32 (Jpeg)............11(Raw)..............8 seconds of shooting(Jpeg)
1D MIIN.........48 (Jpeg)............22(Raw)..............5.6 " " "
5D...............60 (Jpeg)............17(Raw)..............20 " " "

Thinking about it (above) I would say that was poor design for a 8.5 frames/second camera, you would expect that to have the most accommodating buffer?

check dpreview of the 5D, they offer some comparisons to the 20/30D as well.
Personally, if this is for a hobby, I'd spend the money on a 30D/grip/Bigma/flash for about the same price as the 5D body.

I was also deliberating between 1D mkII and the 5D when I made my recent 5D purchase. Although I do a fair amount of motorsports photography I concluded that, given my particular style, the lower frame rate would not really be too much a disadvantage. 45 focus points as opposed to 9 on the 5D would be nice but the increased file size was the deciding factor.
I suppose I may end up using the 10 or the 20D bodies with the long lenses ( with their 1.6 multiplication) for the track shots and the 5D for pits, paddock and all other general photography.

So far I'm happy with my choice!

Nick

Don't forget it also has an edge on the wide end. I was never happy with 17mm on a crop camera (equiv. ~27mm) but 24mm on full frame is just perfect. The extra 3mm makes a big difference in my opinion...

I have a 5D, and was looking into getting the MkII when I started this thread:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=258584

My concern wasn't so much the frame burst, but possibly improving on the 5D's AF tracking speed and accuracy. I've gotten some incredible shots with the 5D while standing less than 20 feet away from cars going by at 80-100 mph, but I felt the hit rate could be better.

I decided that since less than 10% of my photography is action/motorsports, I could easily live with the 5Ds superiority over the MkII in other respects. If the Mk II comes down substantially in price, or Canon comes out with a digital version of the EOS 3, I'll probably revisit this idea.

I shoot some motorsport and the 5D is just fine. I usually only fire off one or two shots when doing panning-style photos. Its more about the focus tracking and such. 5D does that spot on!

Hi Nick

OP was adamlc, not me! I already have the 5D - other than that, I agree!
