The prob with the 580ex (as opposed to the Nikon SB800) is that it does NOT have a sync imput...which totally sucks... so you need to buy yourself an extrenal hotshoe mount (like the ones for lighting tripods) on top of what ever wireless system you buy, you'll then place the receiver and a small syncord from the receiver to the hotshoe mount.

As for wireless receivers... my assistant as these: http://www.opusprophoto.com …ories/general.html#oplwts (external link)

Now they are made in china and are available under about 10000000000 different brands (like adorama). They are dirt cheap...and she reports NEVER having had a miss-fire... and for 100$ canadian for a receiver/transmitter... definitly worth the look

where does your wireless receiver connect to your 580ex... unless I am insanely stupid... there is no sync input on the 580ex

Ok, yeah, sorry about that. So yes, that thing you wanna use will work... you just need to go to a proshop and ask for a external hotshoe mount, they cost about 25% us and some of the (the one you need) have a sync connector on the side...it will trigger your flash.

Bear in mind that you won't get E-TTL with that arrangement. You need either the ST-E2 or another 580EX/550EX as master to get wireless E-TTL. If all you need is a remote trigger and you're prepared to manually figure flash exposure, consider getting a digital slave that the pop-up flash can trigger.

I assumed the intent was to work in manual much as one with with studio heads

Yeah - but did Dom realize that limitation? Not clear from his posts.
