Thanks for the comments guys :)

Dunkyboy , I always start my projects at around a 3rd the end result size mainly as mine are generally always printed as canvas posters , its no good hogging all your resources in the early stage,s when your really only roughing out , starting small also forces one to be a bit more broad rather get all caught up in detail , say for an end print at 24 x 20 inch 240dpi , I will start at 3 x 2.5 480dpi then go to 6 x 5 480dpi then at the final stage to print go 24 x 20 240dpi , I explain this in more detail in an earlier post , Brad would do it different but thats the way I do it .

Cheers
Rod

thanks Rod, i have read all this thread but i couldn't find your earlier post you mentioned could you tell me where it is please, as i would like to read it.
I love this painting thing, but the hardest part is getting the skin right especially when there is little colour/contrast to start with. Doing babies with blonde hair and pale skin is very difficult. Best tip on here i've read is to select the right photo to start with and to use a tablet.
cheers Dunkyboy..

Here's a painting using Corel Painter. It's a great program and powerful too.

Brad,

I'm very interested in buying this bundle from you. I have a question though. Is there a really big difference between the PS vs PSE versions? I mainly use CS3 myself, but that does not run too well on my wife's little tablet PC (which we have PSE5 on). I'm unfortunately not too familiar with PSE5.

Nice work Brad , very like Carries baseball specialities that she does so well , yes Painter is a wonderful program although I find it a little sluggish compared to PS , but it has some fantastic features thats for sure .

Miglo you will find the fastest PS is version 7 and it has the brush engine needed for this type of work , earlier versions didnt have the dynamic brushes , if its speed you want I would go for version 7 PS , I would say Elements 5 and CS3 probably run about the same as they would both be using the same core engine .
Mancitmiss , NikMish very nice paintings guys .

Heres another fighter Ricky Hatton, Im a fan of boxing and do a lot of boxers , this was done in PS CS2

Cheers Rod

There is a bit of difference in the fact that the tools are not the same between PS and PSE5 but the technique is the same. Many have adapted the PS version to PSE5 with no problems. Hope that helps!

Some great looking paintings here, great work.

Do you set the size of your image before you start painting as Brad suggests in the tutorial, or do you re size after your finished. Can you just re crop the picture to the desired print size when you've finished painting.
I ask because my PC is small on Ram <1GB and if i try to set the image size to start with my PC has a heart attack and says NO WAY.
I Like to print out at 20 x 24.
what do you do........

Try working on the image at half the size you plan on printing it. So, if your finished result is a 20 x 24, try working on a 10 x 12 at between 240 - 300 pixel/inch resolution. I avoid mutliple 'upsizing' the image as I work. I work on the image and then save it as an uncompressed tif. I then open the tif add any final color adjustments and resize it. You can use PS's bicubic interpolation - it does a decent job. I use alien skin's BlowUp. It really offers the highest quality image resizing available - better than bicubic I think.

SO I bought Brad's DVDs. Looks pretty neat so far.

The Wacom tablet is a little too rich for my blood, so I'm going to try the "Genious MousePen 8x6". It got good reviews on newegg. Anyone have experience with this one?

Personally, I would not reccomend it, at least not for painting...the response between the pad and your computer is not even close to what the Wacom offers, which is going to be a huge drawback...also, the fact that the pen requires a battery...this is not as serious a con as the reaction speed, but coupled with that makes me give it a no vote...Sorry...
