First, to address that statement. I know the subject is already dead, but it's comments like this that just crack me up.

I've never been terribly frightened when getting a tattoo. Perhaps you meant scarring? ;] Anyways, there are far more negatively damaging and scarring things that people do to their bodies other than tattoos. McDonalds anyone?

Second, I thought this thread was about posting shots of tattoos...
So, enough on that end without coming off as too big of an arse.

I used to think tattoos were ugly, gross, wrong, you name it and I had every negative opinion of it you could imagine. My dad had a tattoo so it wasn't like I hadn't been around it all my life but I still didn't like them. Along with being passionate about photography, I am also passionate about music and my children. (those 2 actually came LONG before photography) But then a couple years ago I started watching Miami Ink and the artwork and the reasons why people were having them done made me change my opinion of them. I ended up getting one when I was 34. I wanted something that would be personal and would be something I would never regret doing. The photo I posted sucks, but you can at least see it. I thought I'd explain it... red has been my favorite color since I was a kid so I wanted that color incorporated. The large blue treble clef in the center is the color of my birthstone (sapphire). There are 3 heart shaped music notes... the red one is my youngest daughter's birthstone, the light blue one is my middle daughter's birthstone (aquamarine) and the white one is my oldest son's birthstone (diamond). (2 daughter's on 1 side, son on the other) They are truly what makes my heart sing. Towards the bottom of the tat there are a couple of notes falling off the staff. At first this really didn't have any symbolism, I just thought it was cute, but then after I had it done it reminded me of how no one else can compare to my children in my life. And of course, the entire music theme was because I have loved music for as long as I can remember... playing, singing, listening... so it's all of my long time loves wrapped up in 1 little piece of art. I still love it to this day and am actually considering getting another one someday, just can't commit to what I want. Someone said something about scarring your body... I don't see it that way. Besides, like someone else said, I have some really ugly scars from scraping my knees as a kid and other things. At least this one's artistic.

Great shot. I do not have a tattoo yet, my fiancee said once we get married if i still want one she will go with me to get it. I guess that is fair enough. I am getting the Japanese rising sun on my shoulder with mizuta in the middle of it. (My Grandmothers maiden name).

I am resurrecting this thread to add two photo's of my newest tattoo. Nothing compared to the sensational ink shown here or even the high calibre photography, but nonetheless here's my addition to the thread.

Some great ink here. I would post a pic of mine but not really sure how to get an "artistic" shot of it.

For those asking about why people get tattoos, well it is really different for everyone. Some people do it because it is the "trendy" thing to do while others have special meaning (which I believe that it can be thought of as a spiritual experience thus it being a spiritual thing).

Anyways, mine is a large-ish dragon on my back and shortly here I plan to finish it as well as get another dragon sleeve done (probably 3/4). Reason for the dragons is simple to me:
1. Something I have loved since I can remember, basically some of my first memories.
2. To me Dragons symbolize two things; Strength and Wisdom(not to be confused with Knowledge). Strength as in mental, physical, psychological and spiritual strength. Wisdom, not Knowledge, because someone that is wise may have the same Knowledge as another person but the difference being the Wise person knows when to properly use that knowledge, a knowledgeable person just uses it to benefit themselves.

Growing up I was taught two things most of all out of everything; you only fight when it is absolutely necessary and you respect others no matter what because eventually they will either leave you alone or give you the respect you deserve. Growing up though this caused problems for me because I would walk away from the "normal guy" fights and thus was picked on quite a bit. Getting the Dragon was my reminder that I was strong and wise, But I chose to show those only when necessary. I never fought to determine stacure (sp?) or social ranking among my peers but knew when the time came that I was strong enough to "handle my own."
