Yes, this is the first time it's ever happened in history.
You should be ashamed for tarnishing the formally perfect Male Honesty record.

I've never had to lie to my wife. She demands (and gets) full reciprocity in her own shopping venues. She's seems quite able of exacting full revenge in Louis Vuitton stores, for example.

I hate these threads.. all they do is give me a jaded viewpoint of marriages.. Just why did you choose somebody to share your life, work, and children with and then can't be honest about where something as unimportant as money goes?...

Marriage is overrated, there is NO perfect marriage. At some point or another BOTH spouses will lie to each other. The sooner you realize this the better you can deal with marriage.. It's give and take, (you give she takes!) LOL

When Tom delivered to me a wonderful hand me down 21" LaCie monitor, upon popping the trunk I beheld this fine piece of electronics nestled comfortably in a bed of Luis Vuitton bags, seemingly as padding against road bump related damage.

That she would be so kind as to donate her cherished bags to tom for this purpose,. it was then I realized what true love meant. :)

Thank you for some honest confessions. I'm starting to feel not so bad after all...in fact, I'm starting to think again about that 17-40L I've had my eye on...

Just go ahead and tell her the truth!! you had to have this lens. You didn't want to spend the 65 dollars but it was such a good deal. I think you can check to not have the invoice in the box in case you are not there and she opens the box.

Come on, people. Who hasn't lied to a spouse, a parent, a friend at one time or another? Maybe the Pope? The Grand Rabbi? Cut the crap.

I'm married for 25 years; it was love at first sight. All my friends and colleagues are envious of my happiness with my wife. We've never fought about money, and rarely fight about anything else.

That said, I was in B&H and bought an 85L about a year ago. I never told my wife about it. There's no way she would have even cared, but I just didn't need to tell her I spent $1500 on a lens when I already had 8 other lenses. Is that lying? Call it what you want.

I bought a stereo receiver that she knew about. I decided I wanted a better model. I traded it in. Looks the same as the original one. Did I tell her? No. For what reason?

My wife is my best friend. I've never cheated on her in 25 years of marriage and never will. I still open the car door for her each and every time we get in. Say what you will.

mark

See, that's the difference. You and your wife obviously have a relationship of trust where she doesn't need to be informed of every penny you spend on your photography. That's terrific! However, the OP stated:

Am I the only one who has ever lied to their spouse about buying a piece of camera equipment or are there other guilty, gutless spouses out there like me? I knew my wife would never let me spend the money I needed to buy the Ef-S 10-22

That's where I see a problem... In knowing that your spouse wouldn't approve of the expense and doing it anyway, in secret, and then hiding the fact that you've done it.

I've been married to a man who lied and hid things from me and I always found out. Trust me, it would have been a lot easier on him to fess up at the time then face the wrath of a decieved and hurt wife. Needless to say, we are no longer together.

Do what you want, but be prepared for the consequences.

We talk about our hobbies and needs (for our hobbies - lift your minds ;) )

My wife is a very keen sewing type person and is very good at it. When I started buying camera stuff she watched and waited. Every camera or lens purchase was discussed beforehand and her usual comment was "if you think we can afford it..."

She gave me her total fiscal trust.

Some time after the 5D arrived she asked about a particular sewing machine. Male survival mode (honed in previous marriages) kicked in. I bought the machine. She cried. Previous partners had never done anything like that for her.

I resolved to listen harder.

Before Christmas she mentioned a new overlocker she had seen on the net. Done deal. She cried...

Man - the tears are one hell of a way to keep me listening :)

She got a little puppy the other day. They sit down there in the purpose built sewing room together - both happy.

Listening is the key. She has already said I can go buy whatever replacement for the 1D comes out - "if you think we can afford it..."

Honesty is always the best policy. I could never enjoy something I had to lie about in order to get. My wife and I have enjoyed 42 years of wonderful marriage by following these four simple rules:

One. Learn the art of compromise
Two. Learn to say “I’m sorry”
Three. Never go to bed angry
Four. Always, always keep each other as best friends

Are you kidding??? My wife has all the good stuff but sometimes I have to keep her from selling off an L that she doesn't think she uses enough.
I am quite happy with my 20D and two lenses but I do dream about a 5D w/ a 24-105 L on occasion.

Maureen has always been an angel when it comes to my toys. I remember when I had to tell her that I had pitched my Sabre down the road in Monterey and her response was,; "Well I guess you had better find yourself another one, hence my VFR750F. Of course my life insurance is the first payment she makes every month :-)

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.

I've never lied about anything to my husband and we've been together 10 years and only celebrating our first wedding anniverary next week. We believe in honesty with each other and if we can't agree on something, we leave it for awhile and come back and discuss it again another day. Most times, we end up with what we both want, even if that means saving for it. See, this happened a few months ago, He really wanted an air compressor and so I gave him my money to buy that. Then he wanted paint to paint his car and I put my foot down and said, hey, I want a camera, you've had your fun, now it's my turn. And so he has his air compressor and I have my camera. Now he has to save for paint just as I have to save for lenses.... it works both way and compromise is a key thing in any relationship I think.

Being dishonest with your wife is only going to lead to bigger problems and you need work out a way of both getting what you want. Make deals. Bargain. Compromise. Then you'll both be happy.

I am not totally honest with my husband about how much a lens or other accessory costs because he just doesn't get it. He is not at all interested in photography and just doesn't understand why it is so expensive and why one lens can't do everything. It is not the money he minds just that it is spent on something he doesn't understand. I hardly ever buy shoes or new clothes the way most women splurge. He also gets to enjoy the expensive game of golf and I don't complain about that. I lie about the actual cost just to keep the peace.

When I catch my wife lying to me about something that she had purchased, I just laugh inside thinking how cute she is. It tells me more about her innocence than her deviousnss. I'm the same way, but I just don't know how she'll take it when she finds out about my new 100-400.
