My wife does our company books and I buy all my gear through the company, so there is no hiding anything. I never do anyway. I don't understand why you would not be honest with expenditures with the wife. Yes, I sometimes get some grief about purchases, but then so does she. Just keeping each other in check somewhat.

Besides, I am owed, I have bought $3.5k worth of camera gear in the last few months, she is at $12.5k in furniture. What the hell do you need expensive furniture for, and where the hell have my cable reel end tables gone anyway. ;)

Exactly, furniture is way over rated. I mean whats more important, a 300mm prime or a couch. Seems like a no brainer to me. ;):)

Hormones... ;)

He obviously does not comprehend the power of hormones.

Have I done it? No, actually. I'm a believer in honiesty, and besides when she's battling me away from Hasselblad's and Profoto lights... a new lens is just a small fish.

My philosophy is if a person can handle the truth then they get the truth.
Now I never lie about anything I buy but I am not open about what I have spent unless I know there isn't going to be any whining. If my spouse can handle the truth he gets it.
I have told my husband if he opens my credit card bill when it comes then he has to pay the whole thing off. Believe me doesn't touch it.. well he has twice and he did so because he wanted to pay it off. If he is upset over what I have spent on a lens I simply say you shouldn't have looked... Of course I would never buy camera equiptment if we were in huge debt or couldn't pay our bills. If your responsiable with money your partner (key word PARTNER) should be ok with the saving for camera stuff. Your not married to your mother or father.... What you put into a realionship is what you will get back.
Its all about balance... not, fear and control....

I can safely say I have never lied to your spouse.

But goofy as it seems I don't lie to mine either. I asked for $4K for a new body and she requested Tom Selleck.... I said I will go ahead and get the new body and if he shows up you can have him. So far I am safe.

My wife knows of my addiction so it is not really news, she knows that I am going to get a 500mm f/4 L this year. Oh well, there is no telling what she will want.. either.

i love and respect my wife too much to lie about anything like this. Getting the Aston Martin may not be so easy.

I'm fortunate in that boyfriends don't get a say in how I spend my money. ;) That said, should I get married at some point I don't think I would have the energy to sneak around. I work hard and I have two very expensive hobbies (well, only one really...this photography thing would have to work really hard to rival the other). I like to think I'd simply be up front about it, and work out a mutually pleasing arrangement (i.e. certain amount of discretionary income after household expenses are paid that I can do whatever I want with...whether its lunches out everyday, a new lense or an antares).

It is kind of funny though. Another forum (non-photography) I frequent has this same thread every few months, except its wives talking about hiding purchases from their husbands!

I feel for all of us. for all the nights spent on the couch, for all the interceptions of the package from the man in brown. If only I could get gear delivered to work. Don't trust it here.
