I just purchased the Dynatran CF994 tripod with ball head. My experience with tripods up to this point has been the $40 Velbon model. The legs on the tripod don't appear to have any kind of release to get them to move or lock in place. It appears to be all friction based. Once the legs are moved to their outmost position is that the furthest they will go? I know this sounds like a silly question but I expected them to extend further out (splay). At the very top of the legs there appears to be a lever of some sort. Well, it appears that way, it could just be a cap of some sort.

The reason I ask is that I would like to get a low point of view by just splaying the legs wide instead of shortening each leg and then splaying.
