Hey guys,

It has been a while since I have been on this forum but I thought I would stop in and ask for some advice. I have a 20D, 70-200IS 2.8, 24-70L that I shoot a lot of dogshow photos with. I have never been 100% happy with the results and it wasn't until now that I am sure something is wrong. I have several friends that have the same setup that I talk to now that shoot the same type of photographs. Long story short, thier photos are stunning and mine are bleh. They get such sharp results in similar lighting, same lenses, same ISO (or even higher!), same shutter speed, same apature. My pics just can not compare. I sopke with a friend last night that recommended having Canon look a the camera and lenses and making sure they are calibrated??? Can you guys shed some light on this ofr me and maybe outline the proceedure for getting this done. Any one have results if they have done it?

Why not have your friend shoot with your lenses and see if the results are similar to yours or similar to his results with his lenses. By the same token, put his lenses on your body and see what the results are. Shoot with his gear and let him shoot with your gear. Then you'll be able to determine if the problem is lens, camera or operator.

Runninmann has a great suggestion. If you do choose to get your lenses and camera calibrated, you'll need to contact an Authorized Canon shop and have them send your camera and lenses to Canon. Canon will calibrate your setup for you (probably at a charge) and send them back. You may also be able to contact one of the Canon Repair Centers directly.

Runninmann has a very good idea. Before you go to the expense of sending your gear off to Canon, swap gear with your buddies. That should tell you if it's equipment failure, or operator error.

Thanks for the info guys. We would swap but he is in Cali and I am in NC. I will contact Canon and ask what the fee will be. I would love to get the results that he and others get with thier similar setups. Thanks again.

You do manually select Auto-focus points, this is a very limiting factor if not done as anything could be in focus.

The dogs feet could be sharp and eyes soft.

Considering we are talking about 2 different lenses that are absolutely famous, I am going to go out on a limb and say that you might be doing something wrong.

Can you post a couple pictures with exif info that you are unhappy with? At least then it would be easier to rule out everything else. This method would be a lot cheaper.

If they're under warranty, canon will do it for free. You will have to pay shipping though unless youre close enough to drive to one.

But yes, you should post photos too. It's possible you could've gotten a bad lens or something, but TWO (and with such good reputations too) - you might just be doing something wrong.

Quitting photography for now, but thanks POTN we had a good run ;)

A, if your friends are so far away, were these the same shots. Having the same aperture, shutter speed etc. does not mean the results will be the same - it at all, if the scenes and settings are different, one is likely to be wrong.

Post some pics, tell us which mode you use for your shots and we may be able to help.

Don't know where you are in NC...but there are plenty of forum members spread out around the state that might be willing to meet up for a shoot and possibly see if it is a gear or operator issue.

What are you shooting, raw or jpeg? If jpeg, what are your in camera settings? If jpeg, what are your friends settings. Just a thought.
