Hi Rob,

I have a Jessops own make cheapy tripod (Jessops is a national camera chain store here in the UK), which I inherited. I think they sell it for under £20. I imagine it's similar to any own-brand tripod that shops would sell to casual photographers.

It's okay to use if I'm happy having it always set at the maximum height without the centre pole, and want to take horizontal photos. Adjusting the height of a single leg is easy, but adjusting all three together can be awkward.

If I orient the camera for vertical photos it becomes harder to position as there is only one handle, which can be used to rotate the camera in the horizontal and vertical planes when taking horizontals, but only in the vertical plane when taking verticals. I don't have any experience with other tripods (except the Ultrapod) so I don't know if this is common to all pan-and-tilts or just this cheap type.

Having said that, it was (probably) pretty cheap, and the same thing could be gotten for cheaper online I expect. It keeps the camera still, which is the main point. I wouldn't want to use it for taking pictures of children, pets, or other moving objects as there just isn't the control to position the camera.

A lot of the time I just use a shelf or desk and a sock / glove / beanbag / etc. This seems to work pretty well, especially with the flip out screen of the A6xx (I have the A620).

I also find that a lot of the time I want to take pictures indoors is at someone else's house. I don't bother taking the tripod there, I take the camera most places but ancillary stuff only when I'm actively looking to take pictures. I've been trying to get better at keeping really still for no-flash exposure lengths, but I guess I'm a naturally fidgety person! :) Camera shake is something I've really struggled against - and still am :(

Hope this helps a little,
Ben

There's just so many out there. I use a Quantaray by Sunpak and sold by the folks at Ritz. It was 49 dollars and it's plenty heavy duty for a compact, and will handle anything I will be doing. It's a very smooth operator too.

With camera like A630 any tripod will do. Just use the timer feature when you shoot with a tripod and everything will be fine :)

Best wishes,
Oleg.

I believe the ones sold at walmart for as little as twenty bucks would work well for you.
