Here's sharing a near full frame capture of a Saxicola caprata (female shown, male is all black). At a mere 5 inches total length, I needed to get to within 20 feet of the bird to fill the frame.

20D + 500 f4 L IS + Canon 1.4x TC, 700 mm, f/7.1, ISO 400, 1/500 sec, manual exposure, hand held

BTW, I just started printing some of my bird pics (captured with 8 MP DSLRs) to 20"x30" and feather detail is still amazingly good even when viewed from 10 inches away. The capture needs to be uncropped and pixel-sharp so it can hold up to that large size.

Here's a link to the uncropped 3504x2336 version of the above pic (warning - compressed jpeg but still 1.36 MB). Please bear with the large watermarks, I've to protect the pic when posting full-size...;)

Stunning as usual Romy. Unbelievably sharp.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Look at the DOF on the baranch. Perfect. Is it originally like that?

Yes, the DOF on the branch is as shot, not "blurred" in PS. At this very close shooting distance, the DOF is just about 0.75 inch even at f/7.1. I did clone out an OOF branchlet in the BG at the far right....;)

Hi Brandon,

You'll be surprised that even 700 mm on a 1.6 CF body is often not enough magnification at very small birds to make full-frame captures. One also needs to have good stalking skills to get nearer the subject.

Here's a Striped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum aeruginosum ), an uncommon and very tiny Philippine endemic at 4" total length. I couldn't get closer than 50 feet to the tree it was feeding on. Even if I used 1600 mm on a 1.6 CF body, I still had to crop about 40% off in this posted version - 350D + Sigmonster + Canon 2x TC, f/16, ISO 800, 1/50 sec, tripod/gimbal head, manual exposure and focus:

IMAGE: http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/72784918.jpg

Incidentally, this shot is among the first detailed captures of this specie in the wild...:D

that is stunning. You hand held that monster? I met a fellow canon photographer a few weeks ago, and he was lugging around the 500. I could never manage something that size.
