Jim,

I have the 50 Mk I from my film days and it is too long indoors for me on a crop. I am looking at the 30 for indoor family and children events. Not being a pro, I am having a hard time justifying the cost to use ratio. Thanks for your reply.

Todd

Todd,

I understand. I am not a pro as well. I am an amatuer who derives great pleasure from photography. Fortunately, I have arrived at that point in my life where I can afford (with my wife's total agreement) to indulge my hobby. I bought my lenses to complement each other...prime with zoom. The only mistake is my 24-70 EF L...since I found the 17-55 EF-S IS it just doesn't get the use it deserves. I do use it for portraits and it unequaled in that use.

The 30MM Sigma will not disappoint you...if you do get a "soft" copy then I have read that Sigma will quickly make it right for you. I bought my copy at www.sigma4less.com (external link) as they had the best price I could find at the time I bought it last summer. BTW...the folks at the Wedding Forum really like this lens...that is where I frist read about it for groups and weddings.

BTW...where in No. Ill are you located? My daughter lives in Naperiville and I am visiting her in late April. I'll have my 30MM in the bag along with my 135 EF L and my 24-70 EF L...we are going to shoot soccer :-)

Jim,

I am at a point where i am thinking about filling in with primes as well. It's funny that you are bringing along the 135 as that is another lens i am looking at as a matching prime for my 70-200.:D

I live in a small town called Spring Grove and work in a town called Libertyville, both of which are about an hour from Naperville. I have relatives down that way as well. Before you head up, shoot me an e-mail or PM. I have a 300 f4 which should be good for shooting soccer.

I am heading to DC around the first June as well and then to Norfolk for a week thereafter. Springfield is near DC, correct?

Todd,

Great idea...you bring the 300 f/4 and I'll spring for lunch :) Gil771 lives in Naperville and we can invite him as well and have a mini-POTN meet :)

And Springfield is right outside of DC...so when you come this way let's get together and I'll take you to some great photo ops here abouts.

mij: have you any shots of the first lens you had, i would like to see how bad the soft focussing was in a real life shot- you can only gather so much from test shots.

Thanks.

Found one, taken the day I got the lens, a 100% crop of the eyes of someone coming up to my desk at work. While it was just an impromptu thing, it first alerted me to a potential problem & so I put it through the test shots instead.

I think it has been well worth the time to get a good copy though (& I hope that the copy I had before which took this front-focussed shot is re-calibrated before going to the stores again)

I revising this old thread to ask if it is OK to send Sigma just the lens, or do you need to send in both your camera and the lens? I tested this 30mm on my XTi and also on a friend's 50D and it behaves the same way, so it's not my camera. Makes me think that Sigma could calibrate it without my camera. Any thoughts??

I sent just the lens in last year (focusing motor/front focusing issues) but then I didn't know that some we're being told to send the camera either. It took almost a month but it was worth it.
