In Fowler's Modern English Usage, it states that 'When used as a noun meaning a period of time, while is written as a separate word, separate, that is, from the indefinite article that often precedes it'.

ORIGIN Old English āne hwīle [(for) a while.] USAGE The adverb awhile ( : we paused awhile) should be written as one word. The noun phrase, meaning 'a period of time,' esp. when preceded by a preposition, should be written as two words ( : Margaret rested for a while ;: we’ll be there in a while ). See also usage at worthwhile . I think I got you Roy.lol.if you had used your names it would have been applicable... Lordy, I miss english literature.LOL! Names are not necessary ('Margaret rested etc' is only used as an example. You'll notice the second example doesn't use names). All that matters is that it means 'a period of time' and is preceded by a preposition. I am still correct!
