Connecting PowershotA40 to computer

Hey, I know this is my own fault, sorta, but I just got back from overseas trip to Japan where I brought my first digital camera, a Powershot A40. This seems to be a pretty new model, so much so that the web sites for Canon don't have a downloadable manual yet, and I can't really find any reviews on the net. The picture quality looks good to me, and it really does everything I want in a digital cam at a really good price.

Anyway, it seems to work well, and I have managed to work out how to do most things except for one - how to set the camera to connection mode when I want to download pics to the computer.

My problem is - the manual is in Japanese only, and I don't read Japanese! My Japanese wife can, but she is not home for another few weeks. I can more or less tell which pages cover this, but I just can't work out what setting it is describing. The software recognizes the camera, but keeps telling me I have the connection settings wrong.

I suspect that the settings are not dramatically different to other similar models, but the simplest thing would be if someone out there can just tell me what the manual says to do!

Maybe everyone will just say serves me right for buying a camera without an english manual, but hey the price of digital cameras in Japan seems really good at the moment.

If anyone can help, would be appreciated.

Hi wato13,

First off, here are the three reviews I know of on the Web. You can check what they have to say if you're interested.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A40/A40A.HTM (external link)
http://www.dcresource.com …non/a40-review/index.html (external link)

Second, the A40 counts as a small compact digital, so you're more likely to get camera-specific answers in that forum. I guess this could also go in the Software forum.

You'll need to install the driver before you hook up the camera. That's what I had to do for my S30, and I assume it's the same for most Canons. Once I had the driver installed, I was able to hook up the camera through USB and the computer recognized it. Now, when I connect the camera I'm asked what program I want to download images to.

My S30 manual says that connecting through a USB hub might cause, problems, but I haven't experienced any.

If this isn't your problem, maybe you can provide a bit more description. As well, you might want to try downloading the A10/A20 manual from Canon, as the cameras are similar.

Hope this helps,

Russ

the A20 manual is on the canon site for download, the pc connection is most likely the same.

i use a card reader with my g2(i prefer that to the cable connection)
to connect the g2: you hook up the cable, set the camera to playback mode and connect with the software

good luck!
