1-3 look great, good blur while keeping the subject focused and in the frame!

thanks, i was using my 70-200 most of the day (except for the sequence shots) and using 50 ISO, 1/125 or 1/160 of a sec, and tried to keep the centre focus point locked on a certain spot of each car
the guys on the drift forum that i visit (the guys who actually own these cars) are pretty amazed with the shots i keep getting
i cant wait for the next drift practice, its going to be at night

That first Silvia shot is definitely my favourite. The angle, smoke and panning all works perfectly for me - the rest of the shots don't have quite the same "pop" that that one does.

Nice work :)

4 and 5 were done using the following steps

1. take 4 or 5 frames of car entering corner in manual mode (No af, 1/200th sec @ f11)
2. Process raws the same way (ignore this step if shooting Jpeg)
3. load all photos in photoshop
4. pick an end photo (either the first or last shot)
5. lay the next photo along over the top as a layer, reduce the opacity of it (so you can see through it), zoom in and line the photos up (i used the medical building in the background as a reference point)
6. mask out the bits so the car in the background shot can be seen through the layer.
7. turn the opacity back up on the layer (so the car appears its normal self)
8. repeat from step 5, till you have all the shots layed together

When do these guys run Ben? I wouldn't mind heading up for a go at taking some drift shots myself?

the next one is 2nd feb (friday night) at barbagello raceway
im not sure what time it will be starting, chances are it will bea $5 entry fee at the gate and you will need an orange vest and to sign on at the pit office if you want to get inside the fence (it gets you 2 metres closer to the track and you dont have a shoulder height fence in front of you)
i havent been to a night practice before, it should be interesting

the WA sporting car club calender is up at www.wascc.com.au (external link) - that has all the drift practices, competitions, and everything else that is running at barbagello

if you wind up on the track side of the fence you will probably want your 70-200mm or your 300mm f2.8's depending on where around the track you end up
how well do you know barbagello (wanneroo) raceway ?

in what car ? i have never done a lap of wanneroo - but it takes me 20 mins to walk from the hairpin at the top of the short cours, around cat corner and back to the car - my motorsport experience is limited to Motorkhanas, and being an offical at Rally Australia for the past 13 years

my first 3 shots are from the second half of BP corner just infront of the flag point

4 and 5 are from the start of cat corner overlooking the main straight (obviously - you probably know the track better than i do)

number 6 is someone stuffing up an entry to BP corner, taken from the same spot as 1,2,3

anyway, come along to the next one - it would be nice to meet you

Stock Evo IX with R Spec rubber. The one in the picture I linked.

I actually marshalled at Rally Australia back in 96. Was at the top of the hill coming down into the water splash at Bunnings as it was known back then. That was the year that Carlos Sainz's car turned into a submarine at the water splash and they had to call off the stage.

Think I will come along if I don't have anything on. Haven't tried my hand at drifting yet.

I'm actually doing the MaxAction motorkhana series at Belmont this year. Looking forward to it.

i dont think the evo will do to well at drifting :)
seriously though, the shots of yours that i have seen look awesome, you shouldnt have any problems shooting cars sliding sideways on tarmac, its not that much different from shooting rallying except drift cars shouldnt be airborne, if they are something is seriously wrong
