If the fog was uniform across the image, then the tree would lose contrast, right? Would that be annoying? Most people complain if the contrast isn't cranked way up...

Well MCB, who do you want to please, yourself or others?

The whole fog/scenery/trees/etc thing seems to work best when you're using a narrower field of view. Not so much when you're doing a wider, horizon type shot, as that's when you really can see the varying degrees of opacity (of the fog itself). Fog isn't necessarily evenly distributed.

Here is a photo that illustrates fairly well a balanced, contrasting photo with fog.

(this photo is not mine, and i claim no rights to it. it is being used for illustrative purposes only. found on GIS)

So is contrast important? Most people would think so. In the end it's up to you though, and what you're happy with. You had the right idea, it just didn't work out quite as you were hoping in this one particular photo. In the end, with some PP, you still have an interesting photo worth sharing.

Whatever. My Flickr (external link)

Myself, of course. :)
But listening to other people's opinions can be good, too.

Here is the original.
