The shutter is going, and starting to bounce at the end of its travel. I see a Canon in your future...

AIR, some Ds's have this very early for some reason. It band is a smaller one than others I've seen, vertically, so a shorter lens with a greater angle of incedence than the 400 may
not show it.
It also tends to be quite intermitant at first.

Good thinking, and I believe that you're probably correct.

Just a quickie....I ran out with my 100-400, and at 400mm, it shows up, but only on shots at infinity. Closer focusing, and it's not there. I don't have time to process the images now, but will try to do so this evening.

It sure seems to be the body. Nothing in the lens makes any sense. Shutter, or mirror, I'm guessing.

and you tried before with another lenses, only shows the problem with long end 400 or longer.
so maybe it is the camera itself i think.

I think you're right, Tareq. I'm going to try it with a couple other long lenses, and I also want to try it again with my 400 stopped down to see if that makes it better or worse.

It could be something related to sensor sensitivity either in its top pixel rows.

Yup. First thing in the morning.

This was taken this morning with my 100-400 at 400mm. It even shows up at 100mm, although not as pronounced.

I'll let Canon sort it out. In the meantime, I appreciate your moral support.

Okay...the diagnosis is official: Shutter bounce. (????)

They're going to fix it for free, and they should be shipping it back in a week or so. He didn't know what was causing it, but apparently has seen it many times before.

Update:

I picked up the body today. It needed a new shutter assembly which is just a little shocking to me considering the low number of actuations. I haven't tested it yet, but have every confidence it will be just fine.

I feel obliged to say something about Canon service. I walked in last Tuesday without an appointment. They said the repairs could take anywhere from 5-10 working days. Today I took in my 1Dm2 for a sensor cleaning assuming the 1Dsm2 would not be completed in time for a trip we're taking on Friday. In fact, it was scheduled to be completed tomorrow or Friday, too late to be shipped to me. Not only did they expedite the cleaning of the 1D, they also put a rush on the 1Ds repairs, and I was able to take them both home with me today.

Of course, they didn't charge for either job.

If there was any consideration of chagning brands, the chances ofit ever happending dropped to something somewhere less than zero today.

Canon is a great company, and absolutely deserve my business.
