Here are a couple uninspired shots. It was cold and blustery today, and nothing was moving I found these two sitting on sidings north of Palm Springs earlier today.

Is it common to transport stacked containers like that or were they being shunted from one area to another?

No, that's absolutely normal. The trains that run through here are all 'cross-country' trains, and the double-decker containers are very common. There used to be some areas in the northeast USA that had limited vertical clearances, but I'm not sure that's still the case.

I've seen some limited cases where there were 3 containers stacked on top of each other.

hmmm - interesting. Obviously, you need the appropriate infrastructure for that - we would have problems with power lines and bridges...

Belmondo, I'd rather have the opportunity to shoot clean yellow locos instead of the usual black NS or dirty CSX that I'm often stuck with. Nice shots.

May be uninspired shots, and it may be cold and blustery, but those are 2 mighty fine shots. Love the composition and angle of the 2nd one, really shows the power that these beast have. Love Em. :D

Thanks, J.T. I guess it all depends on what we're used to. We occasionally get some NS and CSX power through here, and it sure breaks the monotony.

Thanks Sandy. These modern engines have lots of power, but they're boring. I'm afraid it's all they send through here, though, so we make the best of a bad situation.

Ditto! Man, pumpkins (BNSF) down here in San Diego get old after a while!

Nice shots. Not a big fan of UP. they're swallowing everything up. Up untill a few years i didn't know they took over SP,CNW,DRGW. I mean they got those heritage units, but its the same. Samething with CSX, CSX is the up of hte east.

It was sad to see the SP go. There's something really annoying about seeing UP engines pulling trains over Donner Pass and along the Coast Route.

UP colors aren't that bad...nice sunny stuff for cloudy days...they are the change of pace horsepower in my portfolio....shooting NS all the time gives you a dark outlook. Now to get your camera fixed....hope the repair is a quickie.

Thanks. We're up early and heading off to Irvine. My poor camera looks pretty sad right now.....no POTN neck strap, no battery, no lens, no RRS bracket, no CF card. no nuthin'. That's how they want it, though, and if I don't take all that off now, they'll hand it all back to me in a bag when I drop it off at Canon.

Tom,

Good job on the shots and my favorite is the second one with the manifest in tow. Endless intermodals are boring and that EMD unit in the first one is just flatout b-ugly. :D

Ah....a kindred spirit. GE engines certainly look more muscular than EMD. It's been that way since the dash-7s IMHO.
