Tom W. I will be in Nashville for the IRL race in July, I think it is. How far are you from Nashville Speedway? I always stay off 24 at Murphfreesboro at the Sleep Inn. Outback is just across the road....good steak and good martini's. What's better after a day at the race track?

Jeff, I'm about 2 hours from Nashville. Depending on the date of the race, I may even be free to drive up. When is the race?

Nashville is a very cool city - go downtown and visit some of the smaller clubs. Great bands, and a cool little blues bar in Printer's Alley.

Tom W. the Nashville race is July 17th, which is a Saturday night. The Infinity Pro Series runs Friday night and I am scheduled to shoot that for 2 teams and maybe a 3rd if he gets a ride. I will be free all day Sat until about 4pm and the races are over about 9 or 10. All my post race work can be done on Sunday unless I pick up a news client too. If that happens I won't be out of there until maybe 10:30 or 11.
Lets play it by ear and see what happens. I would be happy to meet for a late dinner Sat if you would be so inclined.

Playing it by ear is fine - I checked my work schedule and I am off that weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing a race if I can get in. I'll check around on the web.

Perhaps on Saturday, a little tour of Nashville might be in order during the day. I don't know my way around town real well, but I have a vague famaliarity with it having been there a few times.

Or, maybe we can get a group of photographers together so that I may learn the professional chimping techniques. :)

I'm in Florida right now, visiting the folks. I'd like to look into this a little more when I get back home.

That could work. Hooters' lunch is good and picturesque. :D

How's the track set up in Nashville? Are the stands set up in such a way that there might be some good photo opportunities? Or conversely, can one walk around along the fence like I could at the Cleveland race several years ago?

Some of the best seats I've ever had at a race was at Indy, sitting high up at turn 3 so that I could watch the cars narrow from 2 or 3 abreast to single file for the turn at the end of the back straight. Lots of action there that year (and we got our tickets from a scalper, as a trade up from another set of tickets we got from another scalper).

Tom the stands at Nashville are on the western side of the track and I would say that halfway up you can see the entire track. I am not sure but I don't think there is any access to the fence where you could walk around the outside and get some shots. LOL Even my credentials don't give me outside wall access. Being on the outside wall at a track with very few starightaways and watching Indy cars is not a good thing for your health LOL. Since the parts really fly when these cars make contact, outside is a HIGH RISK position. I do get that access at Kentucky and trust me, it is a little scarry when you have a car come by you at 200 MPH less than 20 feet from you. I do know the inside wall is restricted to hot credentials only and they are very strict on enforcing that. I saw several guys get booted last year because of improper credentials along the wall.

Hooters picturesque? LOL Of course, nothing beats a good shot of wings on a plate.

I'm just recalling how close we got in Cleveland, but they set up the pits outside of the track, so we weren't as close to the course as one might think, though I did get some decent views of a short straight as the cars drove towards the pit entrance (there was a small chicane at the end of this straight, so I doubt they'd exceed 125 or so at that point on the track. I think top speeds were reached at the first back straight as the cars came through a very long curve. IIRC, top speed was around 175, but this is from memory.

It's been quite a few years since I was at that race.

Anyway, I'll have to figure out what I intend to do. I'd love to shoot a few shots at the race, but only if there's a reasonable chance that I'll get something decent (or at least have a chance of getting something decent).

Is there infield access? Standing room only access? Anything like that?

Tom it is a night race so you almost need a 2.8 lens. I can't remember if there is any access inside during the race. I know they have a thing called a fan walk but, it shuts down about an hour before the green flag drops.

Check your PM's, I gots me an ideer

Well, my 70-200 Sigma is a 2.8, but I haven't a clue as to whether it is long enough or not.

PM returned - I'll see what I can do when I get back home.

Anyone in England or there abouts ???

I have a question... My daughter is going over to England for 6 months.
She is bringing a laptop and her digital camera. Does she need any
adapter for power (ac ) plug? Does she need any adapter for the
access to the internet, is the "eithernet" connector the same???

Thanks for any help,

Rod
