Angels at St Raphaels

Taken with Canon S2IS, f/4, 1/200 sec, EC -2/3. I was going through a B&W trial period and layered a B&W copy with some details colorized using GIMP.

These are the ruins of St Raphael which is one of the oldest catholic churchs in Ontario Canada. It burnt down but they still use it for ceremonial purposes.

Wow! 17 entries this time. Great job by all. It’s good to see some new folks getting in the mix!

Here are the results for this contest:

First place - spur - "Mission Espada"
Second Place - Stephan A - Jay Pritzker Pavilion
Third Place - Jeece - Light Stripes

Honorable Mention - mishnogram - "Angels at St. Raphaels"
Honorable Mention - Freedom - Church in Toronto
Honorable Mention - teekay - "Recycled Architecture"

Here are my thoughts and comments on all of the pictures. Please forgive me for being brutally honest, but that is how I learn best (from others being totally honest with me).

Lavman - Good for a first post. Interesting picture. I look forward to many future postings.

Freedom - Good photo. Nice job on the colors. I would have liked to seen a little more of the lower part of the building, however. It does fit the theme well.

August23 - This picture (which is a good one, by the way) said more "engineering" than "architecture" to me. Also the photo was disqualified because it was above the size requirements. Just a personal note: Even if this were the best picture in the lot, I would not have selected it - we cannot reward illegal activities!

sw1977 - This picture didn’t do much for me. I did not like the intentional angling of the picture. I did like the subject matter, however.

Jeece - A wonderfully composed picture. I like how you can see the arch straight on and the sunlight shining on the side (showing the side arches). Great job!

The Saint - Good picture of an interesting structure.

scott1120 - Nice shot. I like the fact that you got the man in period dress walking under the arch. I may be wrong, but it seemed just a touch out of focus to me.

Aray_Of_Art - Good enough of a picture, but it just didn’t jump out at me for some reason.

Teekay - Interesting concept of the theme. Good picture.

mommytomjm - Good picture quality-wise. Disqualified due to being too small length-wise.

Stephan A - Great composition and plenty of architecture to meet the eye.

benarnold - It sure has the architectural concept. But, sadly, disqualified - picture above the size requirements.

Spur - Great photo of some old architecture. Well done.

O_T - My wife thought this one looked like a post card for Embassy Suites!

mishnogram - Good picture with the theme in mind and of composition in mind, as well. The sky above and through the windows is a little too blown out fo my taste, however.

sniper44 - The size does not meet the rule specifications, thus is disqualified. Personally I did not like the angle of the object - it looks like it’s falling.

stanley_pope - For some reason, the quality of the photo is not that good (look at the sky distortion just above the house, etc). I don’t know what caused that.

OK, spur, I have my new S3 in hand awaiting the next contest - let’s go!

Congratulations to the winners. My personal favourite was Jeece's light stripes, which I think is just excellent. The Saint's and Stefan's were also really good.

Sorry about the size. I't my fault for trying to get too close to the limit - I had saved off one copy and made sure it was as close to the limit as possible by adjusting the compression (90% I think it was, came to 185k). But then I adjusted the levels a touch and didn't re-check the size after I saved it with the same settings. Must remember to be more careful in the future.

C'est la vie.

Looking foward to the next one spur!

Edd S thanks for the HM, I agree with your comments on the blown highlights and has always bothered me with all the pictures I took that day. Congradulations to all the winners specially Spur. Colour me jealous for having the opportunity to see a place like that. I"m amazed as usual on what people can do with the P&S's. So much for the small sensors, terrible low light capabilities and lack of manual controls.;)

On to the next challenge.

That sure was an interesting challenge. The topic was appealing, and yet simple.

Spur and mishnogram's photos are the two that stood out the most for me.

Thanks Edd S for hosting this challenge, and for a podium finish. I wasn't sure at first if I should enter this particular photo, since I thought it was borderline. I know it shows architecture, and a pattern of light created by it, but I wondered if I was actually stretching it. I had some others that were more fitting to the theme (by my standards), but not as good.

It's fun to see that we have new contestants, as well as a return of Stephan A. ;)

Thanks for the first place Edd, I didn't think I had a chance with all of the great entries. A great choice of topic that brought out some new and old (no offence Stefan  ) contestants. I will consult my crystal ball and hopefully come up with a topic as interesting as this one.

Excellent judge, that's what I wait from him, to explain what he found wrong about a photo!

Waiting for next challenge.

Congratulations spur. Your picture definately provokes thought of late-architecture.

Edd S - wow haha, i had a lot going against me! I didn't realize I was outside the size limit, stupid mistake on my part. Congratulations to all the winners. Great pics guys.

Thanks for the 2nd place and thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I really liked Jeece's photo and I am surprised it didn't get 2nd. I still check this forum but ever since I bought my rebel xt, I have not used my S2IS. These contests are a big part of what encouraged me to move forward with the hobby. And to help focus my shooting activities. So, when I see a contest that I know I already have a decent picture of, I will probably enter. But these days, when I go out to photograph, I just take my xt.

I should probably make room in my bag for my S2. I went to a Tenacious D concert a few months back and brought my XT. That group specifically allows photography and even recording their concerts - so I was psyched. But I was turned down because I wasn't allowed to have a "pro camera". Shoulda had my S2!!!

Congratulation Spur on your image, beautiful lighting and colors. We sure had some intersting pieces of Architecture shown off for this challenge! Can't want to find out what to shoot for this week : )
