30/1.4 might be usable, but I'd want to try before I'd buy...

And thats what I am going to do Friday. The camera shop arround the corner to where I work has a Sigma so going to try it on the 1D. If its OK I will buy from them as its only about £10 more than internet prices

I for one am curious to know the results....
If usable on a 1D2 at f/1.4 to f/2.0 I might consider one...

I tried a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 today and did some comparison shots with the 35mm f/2 I currently have

35mm at f/2

To be honest I am not that impressed. Now, is this the case that this example is not the sharpest or am I at fault?

I am not convinced and wonder if its a bad copy or wether I will just have to bite the bullet and get the L. The general concensus on the POTN forum is the 35 is sharper than the 24 but I have access to neither so can't do a test

I'ld think both lenses are front focussing.

What exactly does 'front focusing' mean?

For example: In the last image, the foreground seems sharper then the object you (apperently tried to) focus on. (some lettering 'forma' or so on the table, 'face detection plus blabla' in the green triangle right side of the board, instead of the group image))
Should be quite easily visible in the originals: If the table is sharp significantly in front of your subject, either you or the camera made a mistake focussing.
Do a search on 'focus test' and you'll find lots of threads.

I can't seem to decide

I have the 35mm f.2 but thats being sold

So which lens do I replace it with. It will mainly live on the 30D but may have the odd outing on the 1DN

Choices are:

24mm f/1.4L
28mm f/1.8
35mm f/1.4L

The 35/1.4 is superior to any of the lenses on your list, including the unlisted sigma 30/1.4. In fact, it's superior to nearly every lens in this focal range. It's worth the money and you won't regret it.

Thought I would give the Sigma another go, so popped back to the shop

I would say, from the test my 35mm is sharper that the 30mm - end of storey
I have confirmed that my 35mm is beter at f/2.8 than f/2, nothing new hear but thats where I have been going wrong with pictures I have taken with it as I have always set it to f/2

I am now going to hang fire on the 35mm f/1.4 L and spend some more time with the 35mm f/2. It hasn't sold anyway so nowt lost :)

I do love my 35/1.4, but on a 1.6x crop, I think I'd go for the 24/1.4.
