During my recent trip to Ethiopia, I was fortunate enough to be granted special access into the displacement camp in Dire Dawa for victims of a recent flood that has killed hundreds and have left thousands diplaced. Here are a few shots:

All great but #5 is superb. Thanks for sharing.

(Side note - I really like your frames - could you outline how they are made?)

I'm always amazed that in pictures you see of children who've been through so much more than we can really fathom, they very often seem to be smilling. While the context of the photos can be pretty depressing, they also serve in part as a testament to the triumph of the human spirit IMO.

FWIW, I'm not trying to downplay the unfortunate situations many people in that region find themselves in either. I have little to no money myself and I still find ways to donate to charities such as the UNHCR, but nonetheless I find it inspiring that people can still smile after being through such difficult times.

red hot sheep, that's just the default frame that comes when watermarking images with PhotoWatermark Professional.

Twitch, I found that no matter where I went in Ethiopia and no matter how bad conditions were, there was no lack of love. Despite their situation, they found happiness and togetherness among themselves. A true sense of family and belonging in that region of Africa.

Very nice and thought provoking series. We in the US tend to get our panties in a knot if the cable goes out for a few hours once a month. These folks....well, we should be so happy. Sad commentary on us IMO. We don't know what poverty is. Nor happiness?

These shots are fantastic,. I love the 6th one in your first post, and all three in the second post the most.

Seeing the smiles and comradery is very touching. I think the late night TV ads that ask for us to send funds to children in need around the world could learn a lesson from how you have presented this group of people.

I was messing around with the tone curves a lot during processing. I was afraid that people would think these were overdone. But thanks! ;)

I particularly like the shot of the children (#7) with the motion blur and the B&W image where the old man's face is slightly OOF. The moments were too special to toss away the images just because they weren't technically perfect. Should I apply for National Georgraphic? ;)

Ed, great shots! Captures the human spirit in the children. If only all adults took their disposition -- we would have a happier, more peaceful world to live in. A smile found in great difficulty is like the sun shining through the turbulent clouds. Thank you for sharing these.

Impressive images LM. Everytime I see living conditions like this, I regret each mundane, stupid complaint I've ever made about the cushy living we take for granted here in the good 'ol USA. At the same time, it is a testament to the human spirit that despite everything, these people can still find it in themselves to smile. Inspiring.

As for you, my friend, a news organization needs to make a photojournalist of you.

:)

That was very poetic. Thanks, man.

In my lifetime I have seen some really bad conditions in the world. I don't for a minute take this blessed life I have for granted. Thanks for that observation. ;)
