Great shots which really bring home some of the despair & hope in this country.

I was fortunate enough to bump around Ethiopia for a month back in 2002 and was amazed at how different this country is from how it is portrayed in the media. From the roof of Africa in the high Simien Mountains, overlooking the great canyons towards Sudan, to the low lying Danikil Depression there is so much variety and beauty. Best of all the rich customs and culture and the incredible friendliness of the people.

Thanks for the photos. I attach a couple of (rather lousy) shots a friend took with an old film camera. One of a Timket procession at Lalibela and the other on top of the Simien mountains. Maybe a few members can be inspired to make the trip.

Thanks for sharing those images. I want to get back to the mountains in Ethiopia someday. That was such a target rich environment that I unfortunately did not have the opportunity to shoot. We were on a bus from Dire Dawa to Addis at the time and didn't stop anywhere long enough to get a good shot in. But driving through the mountains and seeing the people that dwell there was absolutely breathtaking.

Timket is the time to go if you do get to go back. They really take it very seriously, everybody jumping into the water to re-enact the baptism of Christ, dancing priests - they really shake it - and endless loud processions. Ethiopian Christianity makes Western Christianity look tame and puritan.

These photos are all taken from scans of a friend's pics - I didn't take photos at that time but he took some beauties. The first here is one of the priests, the latter a crowd that gathered around me on an island on Lake Tana. I'm slightly on the left of the crowd :)

Wow, you're very lucky.

I had a chance to take similar shots in poverty stricken parts of Mexico. I really didn't take advantage of it. I got some nice shots, but I'm kicking myself today because of some of the things I didn't capture.

Wonderful shots Malone. It's been said before and I'll say it again- you've got talent.
