I don't think you should sell yourself short by saying that your S3 is "nothing" compared to an SLR.

hi JustShootin',

naw.. i don't think i'm selling short, just think i presented my OP in the wrong method. but ya.. S3 is sweet.. my Wife used it on AUTO, but i love using it in MANUAL with external flash. So much to learn from this little POWERFUL camera. :)

goodnite all,
10pm PST.

DSLR's are over rated, they are not the great god send that so many people seem to think they are.

I wholeheartedly agree.
I've never belittled anyone's camera equipment I always make my judgement on the photographs they produce. To read some of the posts on this forum you would think all shots from a dSLR are worthy of Ansel Adams and everything taken with a 'lesser camera' is a waste of pixels. We could equally argue that any thing less than full-plate photography is a sell out.

Moppie wrote in post #2593605 (external link)
I would be willing to bet my house that 80% of the photos shown on this forum could have been taken with a high end compact instead of an SLR, and you would never be able to tell the difference if printed at even A3.
Unfortunatly I doubt that 80% of the photographers who took those photos know enough about they are doing to be able to work with a more limited compact.

I think you are right and the other 20% have their dSLR AND a P&S because they understand the importance of having the right equipment for the right job and a craftsman gets the best results using the tools they prefer.
Don't get me wrong anyone out there with a camera they like, regardless of brand or format, should use it to the best of their ability and enjoy it.

There's no such thing as a bad photo, just the wrong audience.
EQUIPMENT: Canon Powershot S3 IS, 2x Transcend 2GB x150 SD, 2x 4GB Class 4 Dane-Elec SDHC, LensMate 52mm Adapter Tube and lots of stuff to hang on it.
A couple of flashes and a couple of strobes. My other camera is a Sony DSC-P200.

Ok here is my take on this, I've been using a DSLR for about a couple of years now and recently picked up a S2IS. I could tell you that the S2IS is not a DSLR replacement but it is better then most other P&S, but not by much.

If you want to know if it can take quality photo the answer is yes it can, but thathas nothing to do with the camera it has to do with the person behind the camera. Now I'm not saying that I'm that person.

If you take the time to learn how to photograph and have a natural eye to see and visualize the end result then any camea will do even a pin hole camera. But if you're expectig the camera to do all the work you'll be sadly disapointed. The talent is you not the camera.

Think of it this way it's like buying a treadmill and expect it to help you get fit by it sitting there collecting dust I know I have one of those too. BTW they are also good for hanging your clothes of it too.

hmmm, I can't hang my cloths on my camera, must be time to upgrade! :D

Your right about needing to know what your doing though, its something holds true regardless of the camera, be it a phase one, or a box with a pin hole in it.

BTW folks, Cheekiang's gotten himself an EOS 400D. Had it for around a week, based on posts in the EOS forum, so I think you're all talking to yourselves.

I used to use some flash brackets on my SLRs that seemed plenty big enough to hang and dry your clothes on. But using them was hard work that I don't have to do anymore. Now retired, I enjoy the simplicity of my S2. I kinda like my electric clothes dryer too! ;)

Isn't this a little bit like comparing a mini-van to a Ferrari? They both get you there I guess.

So the kids are screaming because of the 105MPH in a mini-van?

When did this stop being a photography forum???? ??? ???

I'm so dumb! If you go 105MPH in a mini-van full of kits everyone takes your picture, the speed cops for the 105MPH and the FBI for kidnapping. Wouldn't it be cheaper to use your own camera instead?
