I have a S3 IS, I bought around June of 06 and have used it fairly regularly since then

I was wondering what it would be worth selling it now, and purchasing a rebel XTi. I have the original receipt, boxes, everything, and an adapter tube and lens hood, also a 1 gig SD card. I also have a brand new Raynox wide angle converter, I only took about 10 shots with it, and the box for it as well

any advice is appreciated.

I sell stock photos and I think with a dSLR i can greatly increase my photo quality & sales

dSLR is often a big step for people accustomed to Point & Shoot Digitals. In terms of selling the camera, you will probably get a decent price for it. However what exactly of an dSLR do you find to be of particular benefit to your photography?

Digital SLRs excel in areas like response time (AF, shutter lag, camera response etc. - great for action), fast lenses (for better low-light capabilities and lower depth-of-field), the natural lower depth-of-field (due to factors like sensor size disparity) and the ability to change lenses. However in general, you need to put more effort into every stage of a shot, including composition, execution and (especially important for potential dSLR buyers) post-process. Point-&-Shoot Digitals like the S3 strongly optimise images in-camera to give punchy results straight out the camera. dSLR results often require some form of post-process for maximum results.

Good luck,
Collin

Of course, most modern SLR cameras, digital or film, also have the same aim and shoot capabilities as your compact, which can be used until you can learn just how it all works. Just set it on "auto" or "program", then aim and shoot, just like you would with your compact. I personally think if you're in the stock photo business, that a DSLR would be much needed, but only if you're willing to learn to use it as more than an aim and shoot.

Take a look at the marketplace both here and at Fred Miranda and see if any S3s are listed. I don't think it'll bring as high a percentage of original price as a DSLR would though; maybe a couple of hundred.

A few years ago, I could put any photographic product on ebay, and get a more than fair price back for it. Unfortunelly that just isn't true anymore. I think you will take quite a loss on your S3 and extras if you sell it on ebay.

I've used dSLRs quite a bit, and that's what makes me want one, mainly the DOF options and the pure quality of the photos with the good glass

I know i'd take a loss, so I probably will just have to save up and buy the XTi and keep the S3 as a backup camera or something

I am currently saving for a Rebel XT but I have no plans for getting rid of my S2. I believe each camera has a place. If I’m shooting wildlife in the nature park, the XT will allow me a larger range of options to get great shots in various conditions. If I’m heading over to Disney World the S2 is way more practical than lugging around a DSLR plus the two or three lenses I would need to give me the same zoom range as the S2. Not to mention having video at the touch of a single button.
