I sent canon a couple of email regarding this and this is what they said. Thought some of you might like to know.

I have purchased the EOS Digital Rebel and I am going to get my compactflash card. My question is, how fast does the camera write to the card. There are several speeds of cards. I don't want to spend the extra money on the fastest card if the camera only writes at maybe 12x. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thank you for contacting Canon Technical Support.

The only feature on our cameras that will utilize the high speed rated Compact Flash (CF) cards is the Continuous Shooting feature. Unless this one feature is of extreme importance to you, you will honestly be wasting your money on a high speed rated CF card. The CF cards that come packaged with our cameras do not have a speed rating. I recommend that you purchase a CF card with the memory capacity in mind, not the speed rating.

So I sent them another email:

Thanks for getting back to me on this. At times I will use the Continuous Shooting feature. So I would still like to know about how fast the EOS Digital Rebel will write to the card. Thanks in advance

Unfortunately Canon does not speed rate digital cameras. The write speed of the camera is limited by the drive inside the camera. Using a faster card rated at 12x or 24x speed may not perform any faster than a slower rated card. If you use a card reader capable of reading at the faster speeds, then you may experience faster downloads from the card reader. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Wow, the magical search button is wonderful!
Thanks for making this post, even though it was awhile ago. Answered my question VERY quickly whether or not I should waste my money on another sandisk ultra II 1Gig, or just add a little more to that and get 2 normal 1gigs for the same price.

Thanks again! ;)

For more information on CF read/write speeds check out Rob Galbraith's excellent CF database: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007 (external link)

although the camera may not benefit from the quick writing speed. it may help you if you are uploading 400 pics at once onto your pc right?
