im new here - Hi all...

i have a sd30 ... i love it, its a great little size.. im not sure if people with the sd30 even talk on these forums. maybe that canon doesnt cut it !

anyways, ive played with diffrent options trying to find the fastest way to snap an action photo.

is there features to turn off/on to make the camera take the photo as fast as you press the button? it seems like there is about a 3 second delay from when i press the button to when it takes the photo. that would make it impossible to take a fast photo. example: when i catch my little brother picking his nose,

any suggestions on how to speed things up?

and if i posted this in the wrong forum section i apologize,

- jay

ahahahhaha love your example!

well dont stress too much, i only have a point and shoot too.

i am upgrading but everyone well help, for once i can actually say it is one of the nicest forums ive ever been a part of.

but as for your camera, what type of scene modes do you have, is there a sport or animals one? that could be suitable.
apart from that you may be able to find out the shutter speeds and appature for each scene mode on the camera or the instructions!

I know it seems like a silly question but do you do the half press and wait until the focusing is done before fully pressing the button to take the picture? I've handled the SD30 in stores before and didn't think the shutter lag was that slow.

With the sd30 a Continuous Shooting mode captures a series of consecutive images (much like a motor drive on a traditional camera), at approximately one frame per second, for as long as the Shutter button is held down. The actual frame rate varies slightly with the resolution setting, and the maximum number of images will also depend on the amount of memory card space and file size. So with highest resolution, you'll have slower shutter recovery.

What you are describing there is the AF lag along with the shutter lag.

With your camera, there is a delay as it achieves focus. Then there is a further shutter delay.

Unfortunately, this is usually an unavoidable consequence of using a compact point & shoot digital. This is one area where professional SLR cameras excel in - response time.

There are also further potential problems. If the shutter speed (which you can't adjust on your camera) is too slow, action shots will come out blurry.

So overall, your camera isn't the most suited for action shots unfortunately.

Regards,
Collin

About all you can do to speed things up with the P&S cameras would be to pre-focus (depth of field on them is generally pretty great so zone focussing is fairly easy) and pre-set the exposure. As your SD30 doesn't have a true Manual mode where you can preset the aperture and shutter speed, you can't cut out the metering lag. You might speed up the focussing by turning AiAF off, and letting it just use the center spot as the focus target. That'll reduce your flexibility in composing, but may make the camera go better. If you're using flash, turning Red-eye reduction will speed things up a bit, while making red-eye more likely.
