The GF was over for the weekend and as there was a bit of sun we walked from Malham, over the cove and down to Goredale, returning to Malham from Janets Foss. The shots are all handheld with 24-105 L and 5D (200ISO, f11 ish), as we didn't have time to stop, setup tripod...etc. I did stick the Lee holder on though and this is not something I usually do hand held, I simply used a 1-stop NDG to stop the brighter areas of sky blowing and add a little drama to the wonderful clouds.

I am trying out the 'find edges' method of sharpening (instead of butchering with USM) at the moment so any comments on the sharpness would be appreciated.

Then on the back I took the road from Kirby Malham to Settle, calling at Scalleber Force for a look, it was getting dark and this fellow shows up.

I only had the 24-105 with me, how often do I take out my 70-300 cos I think I will not need it, so this was cropped a bit.

Lovely series, #3 for me I like the contrast of the clouds to the golden colour of the wall drawing you towards the barn.

Good capture of the owl, he must have been pretty close to get such a shot with the 24-105 :)

3rd shot is a beauty. Really good contrast in moods and excellently exposed. Great stuff.

Great shots Neil, but no waterfalls? Not even Janet's Foss? I love Malham and Goredale. And you were very lucky to catch that owl.

I remember falling down most of Scaleber Force many years ago!

He was. I stopped the car, got out, opened the boot, took out my camera, got back in the car then moved the car forwards to be closer and took the shot. He only moved when a truck came down the road - real shame I didn't have my tele :( Cheers!

3 seems popular, but then the light was great. Cheers.

Er, no falls, no tripod :) Scaleber is rather slippery, I remember trying to clamber up the slope to the top fall and getting stuck upto the knees in soft peaty mud, worth it though :|

Heres one from the previous week in the Scar....one which I am undecided on the framing.

Neil, #2 and #3 are my favorites. Do you set the start of the nd grad right on the horizon on these or slightly above the horizon? I also love the owl shot, nice and crisp!

Fell in love with photos.. made lots of money.. fell out of love with photos.. took a long break.. trying to find my love again.

For example, shot 1, the filter finishes at thebottom of the V in the distant hills. A 1-stop grad is great for already dark skies without becomming too obvious especially with uneven horizons.

Total noddy question...

whats NDG stand for?

Fab shots. No. 2 just edges it for me. I like the foreground lead of the sign / fence.

Cheers,

M

Neutral Density Gradiated....filters which slot into a holder on my lens and allow me to darken part of the shot, stops it being over exposed. :)

Thanks guys!!!

Lovely colours, #2 is my favorite great with the signpost!
On the sharpness I think #2 as good strong detail and the rocks in the wall are spot-on. #1 & #3 the rocks look a little soft, could be down to being hand-held? what where the shutter speeds? The Sky's are a little noisy in all three, but with no tripod very good results.
Thanks Terry.

They later shots were taken slower as the light was failing, I think they are 250ISO, the others have some noise I realise and Noise Ninja was used to try and reduce it but I like sharper looking clouds so that brings back a bit of the noise :| Compromise is sometimes necessary, as Lesmac once told me.

Cheers Terry! :)
