Ok. Here's a question I asked in another thread and it was brought up that this one might be better with a poll. So.. Here it is.

I was getting ready to get the 50 f/1.4 to replace my 1.8.
How many here have actually had to send the Canon 50 f/1.4 in for repair as to how many haven't had to?

I've owned it repair free for a whole month. You apparently have some reason to believe these are more easily broken?

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM is as reliable as any other Canon consumer grade lens.

I'm going to take this as a good sign. Thanks to everyone that did the poll. Much appreciated.

If you drop it, possibly. Its definitely not going to fall apart in regular use. It's not easy to bang because its a fairly small lens(i guess it depends what body you use), but its probably the easiest to keep from being hit or anything like that.

Only thing I would send the lens to canon for was Calibration....

I dont know if you were refering to repair or calibration. I am refering to my 50mm 1.8 not a 1.4...

I've only owned it for several months, but no problems with focusing mechanism.

I've got the 1.8 but was considering upgrading to the 1.4. Gonna order the 17-40 L this coming week and was going to get the 50 1.4 along with it. But... at the same time the 16-35 L keeps calling my name also. Shame I've got to pay rent. Better stick to the 17-40 L and just use the flash on the indoor stuff. Some day though.....

I sent it with a body and 2 other lenses because I couldn't figure out where my focus fault was. All were tested/calibrated (as needed) and all worked wonderfully after that - a year ago and no problem since.

It is worth asking how many people use the back focus button or the normal shutter button to AF.

Recent discussions have suggested this lens' FTMF differential is more prone to being damaged by simultaneous AF&MF operation due to the microUSM compared to ring USM.

The suggestion being one is less likely to do simultaneous AF&MF if the back focus button is used to control AF.

BTW I use the back focus button, no problems so far, the lens is about 2 years old.

No problems with mine, I don't use the back focus button.
