I've never had a problem with mine...one thing to remember...lots of the members here joined because they were having problems with this, that or the other thing. Sometimes that tends to alter the results of a poll in a direction that might not mirror real world results. The other thing to remember is that people with problems tend to be much more vocal than those folks that don't have any issues.

I did a poll for owners of the Sigma 70-300mm APO and all actual owners thought it was a great lens for the money and had no problems ... so, not sure your logic actually translates in practice. We don't know why people join POTN either. I joined because I was interested in learning more about my 300D at the time. Anyway, the more who vote in owner polls then the more valid the results, so be good for as many owners or ex-owners as possible to vote. Seems a pretty poor result so far tho!

I droped my camera bag with my 50 1.4 attached to my EOS 3 in the bag from about 2 feet. Since all my stuff was in the padded camera bag, I didn't think much of it until I got home and noticed the lens was jammed. It cost me $125.00 to have it back in working order again. I had it fixed at the Canon facility in Irvine, CA.

I hope more people decided to chime in on the poll then. At this point it's looking like about 25% of the 50 f/1.4s end up going for repairs. I really would like to get this lens but those odds kind of makes me nervous about it.

Yes ... but those in the poll who drop it and such and then send for repair don't really count IMO. That can happen to anyone, any time and with any lens. I think it's those lenses that just develop a fault for no apparent reason, or which have focus and IQ issues that you need to worry about ;-)a Thing is tho' with this lens, I have never seen many issues expressed here, apart from CA and sometimes less than good performance wide open, but it is a relatively inexpensive consumer prime so maybe that goes with the territory.

Overall, I think it is a very safe buy ... but being a tight wad I have just tried using my sweet Sigma 30mm 1.4 EX with a Kenko Pro 1.4x TCon and at 42mm 1.8 it really is very good ... works pretty well with my 17-70mm DC too making it a 24-100mm (or so!)  I might post some shots if I get chance to go out today.

I agree, it is a piece of optical kit, not a mobile phone. If you drop it even in a padded bag you do have to expect some problems.
