At the RG forums?

It os part of an overhaul referred to as "Operation Knucklehead"

I understand that we need rules .. but ... wow.

Reminds me of a liitle quote.

"That which is not Compulsory is Forbidden"
"That which is not Forbidden is Compulsory"

....anyone know the source of the quote?

He's talking about Rob Galbraith's forums. Those rules are kind of draconian. Evidently they've had some problems with folks posting stuff he doesn't like. Here are the rules...

Here's the forum site...

OOOOPS!!!!!!! I've mentioned a site on another "competing" site! That's against the rules!!

I learned a long time ago that you can't legislate fun with rules. I'm sure RG has challenges, but many people visit these forums as an entrance into their hobby, and an escape from their real world. The more you try to legislate that activity, the more people will say 'okay, see 'ya' and move on somewhere else. If that's what RG wants, he can have it - but the quality and diversity will likely suffer. Some of the rules are good, common sense, but some others are the kind that send people away.

I come to this forum because I think I can say what's on my mind and hear what's on the mind of others. I don't always agree with them, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Hopefully, at the end of the day, I have learned something and, perhaps, I have helped someone else learn something. And I have had many days when I learned something from this forum. Thanks to all who participate here.

Have Fun

I was about to register at their site last night and then was confronted with all these rules that I had to read and agree to. I got halfway down the "rules page" and thought, "The h*** with these rules-what am I? A 3rd grader?", and exited out of the site all together. Too bad!

I agree with that,. every forum needs some guidelines... I was in fact hesitant to post this,. being a newly appointed moderaator here,. it is "unseemly" that I should partake in such anarchy

A lot of the rules make sense and are in fact sort of standards on many forums. At the very least, the Admin/owners of a froum need to have rules and moderation in place to help protect themselves form legal action.

...but I truly was bewildered by the degree of the new rules structure,. the fact that one can not even View the forum without agreeing to the rules.. rules which include.. no questioning or criticism of the rules.. (don't question authority etc..) left me very hesitant to click "I agree"... I did not for a few hours in fact,.

I finally did... essentially just so I could log in to see if there was in fact ANY discussion of the new measures on the board...

There was not.. :(

As I said before, wow.

Well, that certainly excludes me then!

I don't want to come off as knocking the forum,. it is an excellent resource for all of us, with informed members,. not the least of which Rob himself brings the most "computer-centric-intelligince" to that news forum than just about any other site around.. (the much adored CF database.. the annual deflating of Mac's latest claims to world supremecy.. etc..)

It is also normal for a place as popular as RG to go through growing pains..

I just hope it all gets worked out to every ones advantage,. and I am sure it will... I hope that whatever friction that brought about these changes is not to serious.

I'm sure RG perceives a problem, or he wouldn't have gone to the trouble of posting the rules in the first place. It will be interesting to see how rigidly (or selectively) he enforces them. It sure sounds to me like he's possibly gunning for some folks, and would love to have a good excuse to boot them out of his forum.

If he's firm in this, he will lose members and interest. We all left rules like this behind in our pre-adolescent years, and we sure as heck don't need to retrace those steps in our lives again.

If we all use a little common sense and a bit of restraint, we will never need rules like that here. The pomposity factor is much lower here, and 'that's a good thing.' (thanks, Martha)

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!
