these are definitely very good starts. To make them better I would try to get a longer lens so you can get closer to the cars. But otherwise you have the right idea: slow shutter speeds. I wish I had more opportunities to photograph this kind of stuff.

The golden rules seem to be:

No faster than 320 of a sec
One of the focus points only
AI Servo mode

and like all rules they are made to be broken :)
