Can you use rechargeable batteries in the Speedlite 420EX? If so, any good suggestions on type? Thanks

Gib

Yup, you sure can. I use the Eveready 2100 mAh ones with the 30 minute charger but just about any brand name rechargeable AA battery will do.

Speaking of rechargeable batteries, I was looking at some NiMH batteries the other day and noticed that they have different current rating. So what does it mean when NiMH has 2100mAh, for example? Does it mean how long the battery can last before requiring a recharge? Or does it mean how much juice it can deliver to the device? And does the 420EX require rechargeable battery of certain current rating to work?

Hello Meisters (Gibmeister and mookiemeister),

The mAh number indicates how powerful the battery is. The higher the number, the more power it can deliver, which means that your flash will recharge faster. I also use rechargeable 2100 mAh batteries in my 420EX. Recharging is MUCH faster (maybe three or four times as fast) as with regular, non-rechargeable batteries. The 420EX doesn't need batteries with a minimum rating, but more powerful batteries are much more convenient.

Great batteries, great company to deal with. I use them all the time. No problems.

I'll second Thomas for batteries.. I get my NIMH and my Powerex Bp-511 clones there..

MAH ratings (milliAmp Hours) mainly effect duration.... the voltage stays the same so they are still universal.. the higher the MAH the longer they should last.
