POTN moved from sVGA (800x600) to XGA (1024x768)
I think it's quite a common number of pixels; my old 12" powerbook has a 1024x768 pixels screen ;)

is there no way to run a script that detects if the picture is in landscape or portrait orientation and then applies the 800px limit to the correct longest side?

Great thread!
I just wanted some input on profiles and resizing on sites. I notice that if a gallery script resizes an image the color profile is lost, ie in ImageMagic and others.

Optimize To File Size

I didn't even know this option existed until a few minutes ago when I read a post from rowdyred94. When in the Save For Web dialog box you can specify a particular file size and Photoshop will get the best quality that will fit into that file size.

On this menu:
QUOTED IMAGE
Make sure the Preset is set to "JPEG High" and make sure that Optimized is checked.

Next click on the little triangle button above the Optimize checkbox (I highlighted it in red). From the flow-out menu choose "Optimize To File Size" - (if it's greyed out click on your right image and try again).
QUOTED IMAGE

Next, enter the file size and set the other options:
QUOTED IMAGE

When you click on OK the settings will be automatically adjusted to fit the size specified. Now click on the Save button and give it a name. It's that simple.

Saw this talk while looking for batch / script info.
Question: Anyone know if I can use 'Save for web', 'optimize' an image size to perhaps 500K, and apply it to an entire batch of (40) images?
These pics are cropped to various proportions, and the batch or script in CS4 requires a W and H size. I could set the W but the H has to vary to stay proportional.
Thanks

As far as I know, that setting in SfW is one of the few things that cannot be used in an action...
Just a sec, I'll give it a try ;)

Edit: Tried:

The quality setting calculated for the image used to record the action gets recorded in the action...

I'd just use the image processor with a size of 800 x 800 entered and a jpg setting that gets you "close enough" for filesize.

I don't know if I should start a new topic for this, but it's also concerning help for using Photoshop.

I recently bought PS12 (CS5) and I'm finding it's mostly written in a language I don't understand. If I could only get in and perform a task under guidance I might get more of a feel for its philosophy.

I recently took (JPEG & RAW) a picture on a beach with my 5D. It's of a small girl holding (carrying) a dog, and it's a lovely picture that her mother wants. However, just behind her and to one side is a large wooden pole and a ribbon that I want to clone out and replace with what might have been behind it, and I haven't a clue how to do this. I'd be extremely grateful for step-by-step guidance.

A small version of the picture is

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.
