Actually it's a little stupid of the software to talk about ppi, since the ppi is dependant on the size of the print. The software should only talk about picture size in pixels.

The software display resolution is sort of irrelevant - unless you only intend to output for the web. I've heard that some monitors will display at 96ppi, while most still use 72ppi. You can resize/resample down to 6"x8" at 72ppi with reasonable JPEG compression and have a nice small image file that dial-up users can quickly see. But obviously you would not do this for print.
