Actually it's a little stupid of the software to talk about ppi, since the ppi is dependant on the size of the print. The software should only talk about picture size in pixels.

The above comments are correct. The software display resolution is sort of irrelevant - unless you only intend to output for the web. I've heard that some monitors will display at 96ppi, while most still use 72ppi. You can resize/resample down to 6"x8" at 72ppi with reasonable JPEG compression and have a nice small image file that dial-up users can quickly see. But obviously you would not do this for print.

Try resizing (not resampling) from 72ppi to 300ppi. In Photoshop the rulers will change, but you will not see any notable difference in resolution because your monitor simply can't resolve higher than 72ppi. And as noted above, you have not changed anything about the image itself, only the way the software is displaying it. But if you now save the resized file, it's ready for print at 300ppi. (In some software you do not need to do this beforehand.) And if you need to print a larger image at that high resolution, you can resample upwards to the desired dimensions.

Thanks all...

But if you now save the resized file, it's ready for print at 300ppi.

Slej,

I can't believe it...it's uncanny you make that statement, because that was going to be my very next question (I know...I did say one more question.)

So, this means that...when changing the (inversely proportional) resolution or image size, without resampling; & then saving the file...those relative #'s/dimensions are saved for both display & print (which is all that is necessary for print output)?

Someone else told me that (taking this one step further), for print output...the best method is to first change the image size to the desired dimensions; & then resample to the correct print output. Is this true?

On another related note: I've now had a few days with this camera (G5); & the image quality is just absolutely top notch! (noticeably better than my old Nikon CoolPix.) I'm completely satisfied with the purchase; & have been inspired to study digital photography [& photography in general...I pulled out some old World Book encyclopedias (yes...from 1965) to get conventional basics on shutter speed, aperture, exposure, etc., so I at least have some fundamental camera knowledge under my belt before moving on to the digital realm.]

I had gone with this camera (originally), to shoot cover & insert booklet photos for my band's debut CD (Now...I'd really like to become a competent amateur photographer.)

Next thing I have to do is get in touch with the graphics dept. at the CD replication house. They want (at least) 300 ppi images placed in Adobe Illustrator templates...& I need to find out the best method for arriving at their requirements.

OK...enough outta' me.

Thanks everyone,

mark4man
