I'm new to this IS stuff and I believe you are not supposed to have it turned on if your gear is mounted on a tripod, but what about if your using a monopod? And what does it hurt to have it on while on a tripod?

My 300/4L IS also has the older, clunky IS. It still works ok otherwise (handheld), but not nearly as smoothly as the newer IS. Philip Casciola
