Train at Crossing

Eastbound Norfolk & Southern, moving at about 10 MPH, taken in East Tennessee with a D-Reb.

Cool photos Chappy, the first photo makes it seem like it's going a lot faster than 10 mph.

Don't worry if you don't get comments right away...the train crew will stop by and chime in...just takes a while for us to hit all the shots. I agree that the shots make it look as if the train were moving faster. Welcome to the forum...don't stop sharing now!

Chappy, Don't worry if anyone doesn't respond to a post quickly, It doesn't mean they don't want to say anything, sometimes the time differences mean that a lot of people are asleep

You also don't have to travel miles to take good and interesting photographs, if you open your eyes to your own locality you will see lots of opportunities I'm sure.

What speed did you use for the shots you posted? the cars and the rest of the scene seem pin sharp but there is a blur from the moving train, or was this the intention?

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I'll be able to come up with anything like JT's recent orange BSNF train photo. That's a nice pic. There's a lot of nice shots here and a lot of talent.

This was taken last Fall at 1/50th shutter. I guess it kind of accidently ended up with the motion look, which seemed to improve it. I think that was with the kit lens, possibly a Sigma 18-50.

The way I get around these days is walking, bicycle, and the city bus. So, I'm not able to get the pics I could if I had a car. Still, there are a lot of things I plan to shoot.

Come now. Take at look at your first photo. Everything BUT the train is nicely exposed and sharp. Had you just used the correct shutter speed, the train would be sharp, too (however, motion shots are good, too!) Don't sell yourself short. I have PLENTY of duds when I'm shooting. I'd say one out of every five I take is worth sharing to me.

Don't worry about not having a car. A bike will get you a LOT of places to shoot trains that a car wouldn't (just be careful not to tresspass! ). If you have the energy and the motivation to get around that way, more power to you. Look at it as doing something you like (photographing trains) while getting free exercise! You can't go wrong with that!

And like the others said, if someone doesn't comment on your photo right away, just wait a little while. The railfans here appreciate seeing pictures from all across the world, and RARELY does a train post go by that doesn't draw comments, whether it's someone showing an interest in your shot or someone willing to help you achieve better results. I didn't just pick up a camera and start shooting one day and got lucky...I learned from the VERY helpful people on this forum!

I learned a lot from photo forums, and have enjoyed sharing photos with people from all over. I started with an Olympus D390 then moved to Canon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Nikon, etc., and fell in love with various models.

Now I've got a Rebel XT and I plan to keep it for a while.

This forum is awesome. I love the transport photos. Every part of this forum is really interesting. The people are friendly. I like how the camera tech talk is separated from the photos section.

JT and all : There were about 50 views of this post and no one had replied. I honestly thought no one was going to reply. People were replying to JT's BSNF post and other posts but not mine. I'd seen the excellent pics here and was wondering what this site would be like as far as interacting with others. I'm pretty blown away by some of the great photos I've seen here. I guess I was afraid that my photos would be laughed at or regarded as trash.
