My mate and I were both using EOS300D's when we got the upgrade bug.

My mate went first and upgraded to an EOS30D but kept his 4 Sigma Lenses.

I was on the point of doing the same but whenI got into the shop I went for a different soloution. I just upgraded to the new 400D but bought 2 Canon L series lenses and moved on 2 of my Sigmas with the old camera.

Who made the best decision

If you're both happy with what you got, both of you did.

It really depends on what you shoot and what lenses you both started with.

It's too subjective a question to get a real answer. Unless you're in competition with your friend, it shouldn't matter.

Better glass is usually a better choice to get over a better body, but of course there are exceptions.

You seem to have done pretty well though, nice choice.

You did.

On your next upgrade, you can get the same body he does and have even better lenses. Also, I don't know what Sigma lenses he has but you have new sensors that are going to make good lenses shine and bad lenses look that much worse. I think you will be happier, if you are both like me.

Depends what his Sigma lenses are and what your L's are, but I don't really like the 400D to be honest. Anyway, the only way to tell is check out the shots assuming you both know how to use your gear and each have a good eye ;-)a

Personally I think you did - but you still have a couple of sigma lenses think about, particulalry that 70-300 ( I assume that is what you have anyway) - it is pretty much made redundant by yyour new 70-200 - I never had much use for that last 100mm anyay.

Im also pretty sure that your 24-70 overlaps fearsomely with your new 17-40 which makes a great walkabout on a crop sensor camera.

so personally I'g get rid of both of those and perhaps put the cash into a few primes, 30mm f/1.4 , 50mm f/1.4 and 100mm macro spring to mind as worth having....

Personally I don't miss the bit between 40mm and 70mm much, and have a 50mm prime to help out if need be.

It's not a question of better. It is simply different. Obviously you had a different opinion of what you needed than your friend did, that does not mean either of you are wrong. Hopefully both of you are happy with your current kits.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I think I did the right thing. The electronics in both models are probably identical with just a few facilities disabled in the 400D. Consumer electronics come cheap these days even at high quality levels but theres no substitute for top class glass.

You never said what glass he has though. If he's got non-EX lenses, then I'd say you did. If he's got EX lenses, I'd say he's the winner.
