What do people think of the 5d as an indoor sports camera?

Quite possibly a stupid question, but i had to ask.........

I know that it's not what it was intended for, but i shoot a lot of indoor showjumping and find myself shooting more often than not at iso1600 resulting in a lot of noise!..... It seems to me that the low noise levels of the 5d at iso1600 and 3200 would be highly beneficial to me..... maybe more so than the 8.5fps of a 1d mkIIn..... is there a major difference in noise performance between a 5d & 1d mkIIn?

also how is the performance of the AF on the 5d for sports in AIservo? i'm sure it doesn't compete on the same level as the 1d in that respect but is it better than say the 30d??

What are peoples opinions on this? It will be summer before i'm ready to make my final decision but i'm trying to gather as much info to help me make my choice when the time comes. It's a lot of money to spend so i really need to make the right decision as i won't have that much spare cash lying around for a fair while after!! anyway, please help.... this whole thing is doing my head in!

If you don't have to make a decision for a few months I'd sit tight as there are rumours about new Canon models coming out very soon to replace either the 1DMarkIIN or the 5D or both.

No problem there. In a really badly lit gym, it would deliver better noise quality than would a 1D. You don't necessarily need the 8.5 fps. For gym sports, like basketball full frame's field of view works fairly well, so it's not too big of a deal.

I've used the 5D with the 85 1.8. It has very fast AF. Not sure how accurate the AI Servo is compared to the 1D series. I did not get to do a direct comparison, but it's not crap.

As stated wait if you can... If not i would have to say 1d Mark IIN for its build quality, super fast AF and the fact its a 1d!:)

I keep hearing of all this new camera talk, so i have also decided to wait on the new 5d or 1dn....

But I think the use for a 5D for sports isnt practical if you need the FPS, but for low light , the high iso peformance makes it something nice to have in the bag.

Ive been to the zoo shooting with tele lenses, using ISO 400,800,1600 on my 20D and I cant stand how much noise I get sometimes.

I use ISO 400, instead of 800 sometimes .. and rely more on the IS... if the lens has one.... Shots like this (when the sun goes down) and its hard to get a decent exposure and usually needs RAW correction... You get a lot of noise.

5D would be a more practical pick for me.

ALL I HOPE, is the NEW 1Dn.. has the high ISO peformance of the 5D.... and ill be one happy guy.

Yep, that would certainly seal the deal!............ on the other hand we can't be certain that there will be new versions of either camera, fingers crossed though...... I think if it were the case though, what if they also gave a 5d with weather proofing and 5fps  I don't think the decision making would be made any easier.......... grrrrrr

I highly doubt the 5D or any non 1 series camera would get weatherproofing.

Then you are looking at something of the 1Ds caliber. No one would consider buying a pro body. It would also jack up the price a lot, its not cheap to do that.

It would be nice, but I think its wishful thinking.

The 1D2N will destroy the 5D for sports just in terms of frame rate and AF alone. The 1D2N does display more noise at high ISO, but it's really not that bad and can be significantly reduced in PP if it matters to you that much. For sports, it's more important to get the shot than it is to have the absolute highest IQ, which the 5D is best for in most other applications. In this case, the 1D2N wins hands down.

And don't be afraid to shoot above ISO 800, people! These cameras are capable of going up to 3200 and I find myself frequently between the 800 and 1600 range to get the shot. You're not using a Nikon and you're not dealing with 5 year old technology when talking bout the 5D or 1D Mark II N. They'll both handle noise significantly well with the 5D being superior of course.

I keep hearing people complain about the noise of a 1D series camera at high ISO values...I just have a feeling these folks have never shot any comparable film at that speed. Properly exposed images really don't show all that much noise and what there is, is not all that objectionable. Like Ed mentioned...there is no comparing the AF and frame rate of the 1Dmk2n to the 5D.
Can you use a 5D for indoor sports? Sure you can....will it give you the ultimate performance? Probably not...but I suspect you will get decent images...just maybe not the ones you hoped for.

I have compared ISO 3200 noise on the 5D and 1DMIIN and there is not much difference, only pixel peepers could tell, with real world applications like printing, there is no difference.

I own both and have owned a 1Ds MkII. I can tell you that the ISO noise is not that much different between the 3 when you properly expose the pictures. I tried taking some baseball pictures with my 5D just to see how it felt and I can tell you my biggest complaint was the mushy feel of the shutter release button. I could live with the speed if I had to because I have gotten to where I can time my shots fairly well for baseball but the feel of the shutter is what bothered me most. The other problem is that being a full frame camera, you need longer glass.

Though a great album, for me it doesn't rank in the top 10 greatest hip hop albums of all time. For me it would be:

Eric B. and Rakim - Paid In Full
Gangstarr - Step In the Arena
Boogie Down Productions - By Any Means Necessary
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
Kool G. Rap and DJ Polo - Road to the Riches
Ultragnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Biz Markie - Goin' Off
Nas - Illmatic
Black Moon - Enta Da Stage or Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers (toss up)

Not in that particular order. And there are a lot more I'd like to add to this list (The Roots, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Public Enemy, etc.) Not all of these albums have the most stellar tracks for beginning to end, but rather these albums have had some profound impact on me for one reason or another.

Yep, it's way too tuff to pick a top ten..... i couldn't honeslty do it.... top 30.... maybe......

I like that list though, kool g rap is one of the greatest ever on the mic! i think i'd have to add to that list with Organized konfusion - Stress (the extinction agenda) / Masta Ace - Take a look around / J beez - Done by the forces of nature / Showbiz & Ag - Runaway Slave / Diamond & The psychotic neurotics - Stunts blunts & hiphop / Lord finesse - Return of the funkyman & funky technician / ATCQ - Low end theory & midnight marauders / Common Sense - ressurection...... and on and on i could go! but this isn't a music forum so i'll shut up now....

Thank you to everyone who has given their opinion to my original post, feel free to add on [the more opinions the better] but i think it seems pretty clear which camera i should set my sights on now....

And your list is quite impressive as well. Those albums were all very solid, and worth a lot of money nowadays. Not very many people know about DITC, Juice Crew, Native Tongues, or any of the many legendary pioneering crews for that matter. Glad to see we have much in common in that respect. To this day I still prefer to listen to the old school classics like JVC Force "Doin' Damage" or Lord Finesse "Funky Technician" or EPMD's "Business as Usual" over all this garbage so-called hip hop polluting the airwaves nowadays. I won't even get into the legends of electro-rap of the early to mid 80's. T La Rock, Mantronix, Just Ice, Cold Crush, Word of Mouth, Masters of Ceremony, UTFO, etc... I can go on for days.

Sorry to drift OT, but it's your thread after all. ;)
