There's many brands of microfiber cloths on the market at varying prices. Are they all the same, or are some somehow surperior to others? I for one certainly wouldn't want to spend $7 on one when I can get 2 for less than that price if they were all the same.

That is a good question. I have felt some nice soft microfiber cloths, and I have felt some microfiber that was not super soft but cleans dust and windows real well. Felt like it had more gripping power if you know what I mean.

So your opinion is not all cloths are born equal despite their names? On windows, very grippy cloths are fine, but how about lenses? Don't want to risk stripping the coatings. :P

I have seen microfibre cloths fall into two main categories:
1. Smooth, silk like, generally sold as lense cloths (I use to clean my lenses).
2. Rougher, terry cloth like (I use these for general camera cleaning).

I've been using a rougher kind of microfiber cloth to clean my lenses, and it seems to work very well. Should I go with a smoother kind?

That's what I was wondering too. I've been using the rough kind on my filters, but I don't dare to yet on actual lenses. Oh well. I just ordered some Purosol and their microfiber cloth. Hopefully that'll help me clean off that thumb print on my 100-400L...

Makes me wonder how much those optometrists make off those cloths they sell for $12 ea... 0.o

I buy "Microdear" micro fiber cloths from Adorama. I read about them in Herb Keppler article several years ago and they are superior to any other I have used. It is about the only thing I buy from Adorama as they are not carried by B and H.

They'll equal. They all leave microfibers on my lenses just the same.

I usually buy my lens cleaning cloths from Opticians, although I have one rough one that cleans glass like nothing else, but I got that from Practical Photography Magazine many years ago as a freebie

i get my microfiber cloths for lens cleaning for free from any store that sells glasses (just tell them you got your glasses from them, and any repairs are usually free too..). I also have the more "grippy" microfiber cloths that i use to wipe things like my dashboard and outside of camera clean (got it from Target for auto cleaning), and it does wonders with bits of sand, dirt, and dust (but i wont use it on the optics, thats what the other cloths are for).

I have two that are 18% gray. One is smooth. I think if you keep them clean there is little difference.
