You don't need to justify anything. You just need to do it. As a matter of fact, I'm not asking you, I'm telling you! Do it now before I beat you!

Seriously, nothing's more important than finishing your education, and I admire you for your discipline. I wish more young people would think as you do. You've got a great tool to learn and grow with for now, and I'm sure you'll acheive your goal of getting a FF sooner rather than later. ;)

But then I tell myself -- I'm a photojournalism major; I need top-notch photo equipment, right?

Well, my interest in photojournalism peaked when I still owned the modest 20D. So I'd say you really don't need to spend all your hard earned dollars to acheive the desired result. ;)

Great review, Pantie-Man... Since going to the 5D, I've been missing my 10-20 (I gave it a go last night and the tunnel-vision it gives isn't something I want to put up with). Taking a look at your shots makes me think seriously about the 15mm.

Go for it, man! It's a really fun lens to have.

For me it's like having a 4 man team of guys with special skills. Everyone in the team is a serious player, but brings a unique capability to the team. The 15mm Fisheye is a serious player, but is also the guy who is fun loving, humorous and lightens the mood.

Man, good stuff Lord. I'm very intrigued. I wonder if the plug-in could straigten out a peleng 8mm shot from a 1.3 crop? I'll have to look into this!

Thanks for the info

William can I ask you how the Peleng performs on the 1Dn? I'm about to get a 1Dn and sometime in the future I'll be wanting a fisheye type lens to play about with.

Sure. I've been very happy with mine on the 1dmk2n and the 20d. On the 1d though, you almost get the whole cicle from the fisheye in the frame, whereas on the 20d image fills a large percentage of the frame.

I can pm you some links when I get home of more samples... but in the meantime, you can see what I'm talking about in this thread:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=206315

I shoot lightning often and decided to give the fisheye a try one day. :D Not a common subject for a fisheye lens, but you will see what I was talking about above when it is used on a 1.3x body.

Regards,
WT

So did you download the trial version of ImageAlign and try straightening out the 8mm fisheye lines?

Not yet :( I'm checking email and forums quickly while helping my kids with their homework. Will give it a go tonight if I can find anytime. Might have to wait until the weekend.

later!

UPDATE: Those interested in exploring the wonderful world of distortion correction software may also want to have a look at Image Trends' Fisheye-Hemi plug-in. This plug-in is about $30, which is much less than ImageAlign. However, unlike ImageAlign, you don't have control of the disortion correction. There is no dialog box with sliders and such. It's fully automated, which means when you launch the filter it automatically goes into the conversion. Still, it does a really great job of remapping the fisheye image while improving the overall image resolution and not distorting people who appear at the edge of the image, which is a trait typical of using rectilinear mapping programs like ImageAlign.

You can find out more about Fisheye-Hemi and download the trial version here...
http://www.imagetrendsinc.com/index.asp (external link)

Depsite it's attractive price and ability to render people in the image relatively distortion free, I would still prefer to use programs such as imageAlign for architectural structurers and other scenes not having people in them (such as in the exmple on page one). If your aim is to correct the fish-eye distortion for images that have a lot of people in them, and you don't care to have them look distorted (i.e. group photos), the Fisheye-Hemi plug-in just might be your ticket. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have both plug-ins installed in your machine. ;)

UPDATE: After de-fishing, when you manually crop the top and bottom of the image rather than using ImageAlign's correction to eliminate the dead space, not only do you retain much more edge detail, but you'll end up with an even wider FOV. In effect, the FOV of my dining area on page 1 should be between 14mm and 15mm! Another cool point to consider! ;)

Hey,

do you find that now that you have this solution, you would be using the 16mm end a lot less on your 16-35L?
