does anybody have any inside scoop on the Finepix S5 Pro? is it a formidable competitor to the 5D in terms of image quality and noise suppression? what are the chances that the dark side adapt the Super CCD sensor from the S5 to their upcoming bodies?

fuji's color and dynamic range is better, the 5d's high iso, viewfinder, FF etc beats it

Fuji would have a bigger dynamic range for sure, it uses Nikon accessories such as flash and lenses, and is weather sealed. It has a 1.5x crop factor and is cheaper at $1899. At full dynamic range, it's files are bigger than the Canon and I'm almost sure the camera will be slower as well. Since the body is from the Nikon D200, I think it feels nicer than the Canon.

It's an interesting proposition. Many wedding photogs prefer the Fuji to Canon or Nikon. My neighbor at work who is a professional used to shoot with a Fuji s3 and a Nikon D200, once he heard about the upcoming S5, he sold the D200 and put an order for a S5 and is currently shooting with a borrowed s3 as a back up. It should come out in Feb. I'd wait for a test at dpreview before making any judgments about IQ compared to the 5D.

As for when the Digic III will come out and if it will have a wider DR, your guess is as good as anyone's.

Hmmm.. interesting.....
I love the D200 body, just not the files it produces, might have to check this out when it is released.

Looks almost identical to the Nikon D200.

EDIT: Oops. It is a Nikon 200. Just has a different badge.

Fuji uses Nikon bodies, the S3 was based on plastic body used for a film slr. I hear other than the badge, sensor, and the processing program, everything else is same as the D200.

Dynamic range is not improved over the Digic II to my knowledge.
Improved noise reduction and added face detection AF were the main upgrades.

Didn't the Sigma dSLRs have something like this with their Foveon system? http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sigmasd10/ (external link)

Even if it has extra dynamic range (maybe) can a camera with only 6mp output really compete with the 5D's nearly 13 million BIG & quiet pixels?

No.

I'm very excited about the S5 Pro, but not sure I'd switch from Canon for it. For dynamic range I'm sure it's fantastic, but for over all best resolution it's still very much like a super 6MP camera.

To see what I mean go check out the reviews on Dpreview for the prior S2 Pro and then the S3 Pro. Once you've read these you will notice that the S5 Pro is using the same sensors, the biggest upgrade will be the new body and new processing. But the over all resolution IMO will likely be on par with our current 30D. Just with Fuji color and hyper-dynamic range. Which isn't bad at all, just not sure I'd sell my EF line for a camp of Nikkors just yet.

And for low noise with High RES files, I doubt you could do better then a 5D with these rebates.

I've never found the DR on the 5D to be a limiting factor.

I shot with an S3 a few times and was pretty underwhelmed with it to be honest. For my money the best camera on the market for wedding and portrait shooters is the 5D.

From what I remember I think Sigma touts the Foveon sensor as having better color rendition. This is another interesting sensor technology that I wish we can see more of.
