It seems cheap enough to just try, but if it's going to be completely worthless, or mess up existing automatic focus or something I didn't even want to try.

I haven't tried that particular one but I did have the HAODA split screen in my 350D and it worked pretty well. Mine wasn't completely accurate so when the two halves matched the focus was a tiny bit out. Taking that into account it was certainly easier to MF than the standard screen.

Another thing to remember with any split screen on the 400D is that you will not be able to see the AF points flash red because they get completely diffused. You may see a slight red glow around the frame.

They won't affect autofocus but they may affect metering a bit.

The Haoda screen was alot more at $75 so for this price I may get one for my 400D.

EDIT: Just ordered one... hehehe (review to follow)

Around the frame? So you can't tell which AF point has been selected/which one you have selected? I have some MF extension tubes I wanted to play with for the ocasional macro shot, but can't seem to ever get the focus right. And also have some old mf lens I'd like to get an adapter for just to play with, but didn't want to buy the adapater till I had a way to be sure I could focus them.

if you are on MF, once you get the image in focus, the red AF point should flash

As said, with a split focus screen, it's difficult to make out the red flash points on the 350D and 400D (the 20 and 30D's are different though). In darker conditions, their not too difficult to make out, but they are blurred. You can tell their location though.

Anyway, I have a Haoda focus screen, it seems to throw off my metering slightly also, which is an annoyance, but it works well.

Another good company is Katz Eye...google for them.
