Canon filters good enough just for protection?

I'm just starting to get all my camera gear and figure I should get some filters for the lenses. From the boards here, it seems people don't think too highly of the Canon filters, but I'm thinking of getting some Canon UV filters just to protect the lenses. Are there any reviews of lenses that would show that putting a cheap filter is worse than no filter at all?

Do a search, and you'll find a lot of people don't think highly of any filter whatsoever.
*If* you want to use one, buy the best you can afford. Like a B+W MRC....
Use a hood always, and a filter only when you need to. Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

do NOT use canon UV filters. if you are going to use a UV filter get a high quality B+W MRC one.

Don't get cheap filters. If any filter will affect your IQ, it'll be the cheap one. B+W MRC, Heliopan or Hoya SHMC.

I was told the Canon filters were made by Tiffen, and Tiffen sucks. Those filters are currently great drink coasters.

I don't get it. Before you found out they were Tiffens, they were ok, but as soon as you found out that it's Tiffens, it's not ok all of a sudden?

Shows you how much impact filters have on IQ doesn't it? Seriously, most of the time any old piece of glass will do - it's when you're in the critical situations that it becomes important. And who wants to carry cheap filters for day-to-day and a good set for when it matters?

I'm such a hypocrite.

I'll explain myself, Tee. I owe you that much because you come here a lot and stalk me. I purchased the filters to be used in Africa and I anticipated a lot of dust and harsh conditions. I wanted a cheap sacrificial lens filter solution, so in that respect the Canon filters were okay. I did notice improved IQ in my images when I got home and slapped on my Hoya filters though. Truthfully, I'd rather my lenses go naked up front.
