Yes, that is closing speed. If you consider the velocity of both aircraft, it doesn't give you a very wide time window to get the shot.

It happens all the time, most people are just not aware unless they happen to look out in the brief time such a passing is visible. The rules and the FAA dictate 1000' of vertical seperation, and due to the accuracy of navigation it is common to have very little lateral seperation between two aircraft going in opposite directions on the same airway.

That looks more like a 777. With RVSM, you can get a really close look at a passing A/C. Best I seen was a 747 head on 1000' below us. Thanks for sharing with us.
